I am planning to start sorting out my pile of old photos but many of them are quite dirty with a century's finger marks on them! Is there any safe way to clean them up? I know the answer could be don't do it, leave it to a professional, but the reality is that I can only do that with a few special photos. Has anyone any experience/ideas?

scan them at a res of 600 dpi and use the heal brush in photoshop then apply an orange layer with about 20% transparency and print them on good quality paper. The touch up in photoshop is a fidly time consuming job but its well worth the effort.
I actually do photo restoration and charge about $35 per hr but anyone with decent photoshop skills can do it and probably do a nice job if they take their time and pay attention to detail

hope that helps

Thank you FireHorse - that's really helpful. I'll have to set aside some time and practise a bit!
