    Default Stephenson at Doncaster

I live in Ontario Canada .. and I know that my Stephensons came to Canada in 1854. I have a William Stephenson, baptised Doncaster Aug 18 1782 .. he married Alice Carter at Cantley parish W Yorkshire (just E of Doncaster) in 1811. With parish records lising Henry born 1812 / William 1814 and Edwin Carter Stephenson at Doncaster in 1816. Henry married a Mary Ann Hill at Doncaster in 1840 .. William married Mary Scott at Cottingham E Yorks in 1838 .. and I can see nothing further on Edwin. Henry moved to Branton in Cantley parish and took over his uncle Wm Carters farm .. he had 4 dau's and one son .. the son was a Thomas Stephenson born Doncaster in 1841.
I always thought it would be interesting to find anybody in present day England with the Stephenson surname .. related to this same family. My two best chances would be through the two brothers Henry & Edwin .. as inbetween Wm came to Canada (and is my GGG) .. but as I say .. I have nothing further on Edwin C .. he must have died as a child .. and as far as Henry's son Thomas .. in the Cantley (village of Branton) W Yorks 1881 census . Thomas is at this time 40 and single .. his Dad (Henry) died in 1882 .. and Thomas just disappeared for me .. then another researcher found a T.S in the south Yorkshire Asylum at Ecclesfield / Wadsley West Yorkshire .. born Doncaster (I think this is near Sheffield) in the 1891 census ... and a Thomas Stevenson age 61 born Doncaster in same asylum in 1901. On free BMD there is Thomas Stevenson died 1913 .. that I think could well be him. So both of my best chances for finding the surname continued .. died for me 'as it were'

Edwin Carter Stevenson baptised Doncaster Nov 20 1816 .. parents Willam & Alice .. then I can find nothing more.

    1881 UK Census .. Cantley / Branton W Yorks .....

    Henry Stephenson / head / Widr / 67 / Farmer of 8 acres / born: Doncaster
    Thomas " / son / unmar. / 40 / Farm Labourer / Doncaster
    Elizabeth " / daur / " / 36 / Housekeeper / "

** I can not see Thomas in the 1861 or 71 census .. his Dad Henry is at Branton in Cantley .. but Thomas is not with the family .. in 1841 Henry is at Doncaster (down as a cow keeper) and in 1851 he is in Hatfield West Yorkshire. And I am still not sure where Thomas is in 1891 or 1901 .. he may well be the T.S. (1891) and Thomas Stevenson (1901) in the S Yorks Asylum (at Ecclesfield) .. and may be the Thomas that died in 1913 .. I am just not sure.
I have a letter (from a grandaughter of Thomas's sister 'Alice') .. in which this lady gives me family info on all the dau's of Henry Stephenson .. but when it comes to Thomas .. she says " my grandmother never mentioned a brother Thomas" .. so if he was put in the asylum .. that could explain why.
*** Henry's parents [Wm Stephenson & Alice Carter] seemed to have died real young .. at Doncaster .. William at age 37 in 1820 & Alice in 1819. Both buried St Wilfrid Church, Cantley .. about 3 miles E of Doncaster.

Oh no ... not another one .. that the family did not want to talk about. Although I would have to find where he was born .. to really say for sure.
Maybe I have rellies in Australia.
Elsabels: what site did you get an Edwin Stephenson transported 1838 from?

Before the internet .. back in 85 .. I got address's for Uk newspapers .. and wrote to one.. asking if they would print an ad (Canadian looking for rellies). That is how I heard from this lady. This is a typed transcription of the original. On this site here I found a link to 'Norfolk Gravestone Resouce' and there found record of a stone for Eleanor Lake buried at Hemsby Norfolk.from www.gravestonephotos.com .. St Mary The Virgin Church Yard Hemsby Norfolk
