Here's the marriage Joseph J Powell to Catherine Jones Pontypridd Glamorgan April/May and June 1916. Gro number 11a, 1042

If you can get a copy of that cert from the General Register office then it should have both parents' names and occupations on it which will make it easier for you to trace further backwards.

Was he in army? There is an army record for Joseph JamesPowell born Merthyr Tydfil signed on when he was 17 and a bit . He served for a bit over the year and was discharged as no longer physically fit. He was in Baghdad(Iraq) His next of kin has Edwrarad crossed out and his grandmother Mrs Powell , 7 Dinas Rd Dinas is there. Discharged 19 June 1915. Of good character. He was a collier on entry at Dinas

On 1901 census is a Joseph Powell living in Merthyr aged 3 with parents Thomas and Louisa both aged 27 and some daughters, Sybil 5, Lilian E 2 and clara1 but no Edward. Thomas is a solicitors Clerk. Family are living at 43 Union Terrace Merthyr Tydfil.

Will look on 1911

Looked on 1911 and family are at 31 lancaster Villas Merthyr. Thomas is now a reistrar of births and deaths and s few more daughters have been born.... but no Edward so if you are sure your Joseph Powell had a brother Edward then this is not your family....
