    Default Marriage records

Hi, I recently commisioned some research in Waterford for two marriage records, none of which identified either father. Both records were located at St Mary's Parish which also boarders Clonmel. I have emailed Waterford to enquire if there are any any other records worth pursuing and have so far got no response. I am happy to pay for this research, but first I need to know that there is a good chance of getting results. I am not sure if the records were from the Parish or registra. These are the records that I was sent. I would be grateful for any advice

Well you have some positive information there but strange that the parents'names are not given.
Could you not drop a line to the present parish priest of St. Mary's Clonmell(enclosing a small donation to parish funds) asking about them and seeing if there is further information. The Roman Catholic churches usually hold the original registers. Some priests are very obliging.
Google for address of church and present incumbent.

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply; I did visit St Mary's a few years ago and was told that the records are not held in the Church

Not sure at all but would a copy of them be with the National Library of Ireland at Kildare Street, Dublin? This would be before registration but yes I would have thought the church itself would keep some sort of record. Do they say why they have not got records? Perhaps it may be worth writing to the church.

    Suero,
Have you tried the Gro Ireland at Roscommon. Google for address. It seems they are very good at sending out certs.
These would surely each have fathers' names and occupations on them.

Statutory registration of RC marriages only started in 1864 so the GRO won’t have these 2 marriages. The information shown in post 1 must have come from parish records, all of which should be in the National Library. However early RC parish records often don’t give much information. What you already have is probably all there is.

Tradition was to marry in the wife’s church (if bride and groom came from different parishes).

Thank you to all the people that responded to my enquiry. I did take your advice Lola and contacted GRO and Elwyn your information is unfortunatly accurate; I had already contacted them before reading your response. Thanks also to Pejay, but again Elwyn's information is again right. It is sad that I don't think I can go any further back. I had pinned my hopes on the 1901 Census, but again luck is not on my side. My family lived in Upper Irish Town, Clonmel and I had hoped to get some information e.g. approx age, but the Census for Irish Town as far as I know was never transcribed. The information about Irish tradition re the wife's parish is at least something to grasp at
