    Default Irish Lookups please.

I have Joseph Ryan and Maria Coughlan both born in Tipperary 1842 and marrying there in 1866. I know their fathers were John Ryan and Timothy Coughlan.

Can anyone help with mothers' names and birthdates etc, please? They may be from Carhue, Dundrum

    Tipperary.

You may or may not know that the Bishop of Cashel and Emly has put a copywrite on all the records for that area. This makes getting information for Tipperary very difficult and expensive. Only the one organization can do look ups and from memory its around 200 pound for a search. All the information held by LDS has had to be removed from viewing.

My GG Grandfather was from Cashel and only he and his brothers and families came to Australia, there must have been daughters as well but at this stage we have no idea of their names or who they married. They may have come to Australia too, but so far no luck. Or I may have family still in Ireland that I would love to find. I also have a number of Ryan's from Tipperary in my direct line. I was lucky other relatives had already done this side of my tree and they had obtained the information.

I wish you good luck in your search.

Hi Kate, Thanks for your reply although I must say I was disappointed to learn of the copyright etc. What's with this Bishop?? So many other places are trying to get info on the net for people who are doing their family research. At that price it sure makes it almost impossible to get ahead. He must be a grumpy old man. Helen.

Hi Helen, unfortunately he is not a grumpy old man so we will have to wait a long time before he kicks the bucket and we get a reasonable Bishop in there. We can only assume he is money hungry. Unfortunately it is one of the first areas in Ireland that are very difficult to get information from.

The records were more readily available under the old Bishop but it changed when this one came in. There is a lot of pressure being put on him to change his attitude but unfortunately it has all fallen on deaf ears.

If they came to Australia you may be able to find them on this site.

I found my GG Grandfather and his brothers and their families on here. I also found other researchers under the surnames search on GenForum Message Boards you can also try the Tipperary Board there. Most of my cousins I found through these message boards and they gave me the information that they had.

Unfortunately Ryan is a very common name in Tipperary as friends (who turned out to be related) found when they went to Cashel to look up their Ryan Ancestors.

    Best of Luck Helen.

    Thanks Kate,

Didn't mean any disrespect to the bishop. Will try what you have suggested. Good luck with your searches too.......Helen.

I didn't mean to imply you were being disrespectful, but I was being slightly disrespectful. What I really meant to say was that he is still a fairly young man and yes I think he is grumpy too. I meant that unfortunately we are going to have to wait a long time for him to be replaced and then maybe we will get a more reasonable bishop in his place. Unfortunately I will probably not live long enough to see him replaced. We can only hope that one day he sees the light and allows free access to the records

From what I have read on various forums there are an awful lot of people singularly unimpressed with the Bishop of Cashel.

Hi Helen, I have just read your post and replies and I don't know if this will help but the Tipperary Family History Research did some research for me and it cost £52. Their website is:- www.tfhr.org or you can e-mail them at:- research@tfhr.org I was doing research for my aunt in law and all she knew was the name and date of birth of her mother and that she was born in Tipperary. The tfhr sent me the parents and siblings names and dates of christenings from the parish register all on seperate sheets of paper that all listed the the godparents plus the marriage details of the parents marriage and also the marriage of the grandfather's marriage. They also sent me the 1901 census entry of the family including my aunt's mother. Hope this will help
