Default Where do I look? (Norton)

I've hit a brick wall and now it's really holding me back but I really don't know where to look anymore.
My gt gt grandmother Margaret Norton was, apparently, born in Tipperary on 29th Jan 1862. Her father was an English soldier from Kent. That's all that is known about him. I don't have even a first name for her mother. I do know that she died young and Margaret was brought up by her two aunts. I am assuming that Samuel Norton met and married his wife in Ireland because Margaret stayed in Ireland with her aunts. I have no idea where to look now.

I have just looked at the "look up thread" which may explain why I can find no trace of them.

Has anyone come across any Anglo-Irish families or Nortons? and where do I look now?

    emmar,
I had a look yesterday and today but found nothing. There are some Tipperary baptisms on line but sadly not yours. Looked on ifhs site but no baptism for a Margaret Norton 1862 Tipperary. Looked for a possible Samuel Norton in Kent.... there are so many Norton families in Kent. He could have enlisted in any regiment not necessarily a Kent one . Did anyone ever speak of a place name in Tipperary or elsewhere in Ireland. Was the spelling definitely Norton and not Naughton. Do you know the aunts'names?
Yes I think it quite likely that Samuel met and married his wife in Ireland while stationed there. \did he die too.
Any small snippets of information can make such a difference when searching.

What is the "look-up" thread please?

Details for Samuel's wife's family are pretty much none existant. Samuel was in the 39th Foot regiment and I have found some records about his medals which fit with the service record we know about him. I found only one Norton family whose son samuel was born in Kent. I am assuming that it was my Samuel as he is only on one census with his family before, presumably, joining the army. Also his father was a military man too (according to the census) The aunts brought Margaret up in Newry Co Down but as I have no maiden name I'm stuck there. Whan she was old enough to work Margaret went into service for an English man in Tollymore Park. She finally settled in Banbridge where she met and married Joseph Gosling. Samuel Norton is buried in Drumbanagher. All of this information (excepting the census assumptions that I made myself) was written down for my by my grandma, however, she has since sadly had a stroke so I can't ask her anything else.

As for the spelling I'm pretty sure of the Norton as my great aunt (her grandaughter) has Norton as her middle name.

The look up thread was the one titled "Irish lookups please"
    Thanks for your help
    Emma

Well that's quite a lot! You have the birth date and name. You have the 39th foot and you have Samuel coming from Kent and his death place.... so he made Ireland his home perhaps and stayed in the army until discharge. He would have been too old for ww1 but was possibly in the China and Afghan wars Do you have her marriage cert? Who were the witnesses? Sometimes there are clues there.
I asked about spelling as there were a . few Naughton baptisms. I too looked through possible censuses but just couldn't be sure which he was.
I will go and have another root around.... by the time I get back someone else may have some answers for you. If you had an aunt's name one might be able to get Margaret's mother's maiden name that way assuming they were the mother's relations.

Just a thought.... one can get army marriage certs through the Fmp site. I obtained a cert for an army marriage in Ireland and a birth cert to(this was for 1896 in Offaly).
Have you looked on the fibis site? (lots of Nortons on it.) If Samuel's father was also in army then chances are he was in India and East indies etc. Do you know Samuel's father's name?
The national Library of Ireland have baptisms 1807 -1880 for Tipperary. Look for a marriage and birth of Margaret there
The 39th regiment of foot regimental depot was at Templemore, Tipperary . The regiment was in Ireland in 1866 and in 1869 was in the East Indies.
Check out the regiments movements.... Google search brings it up.
