Hi Sweet Pea 193,
You have surprised me by suggesting Richard Arscott had at least 8 children.The family tree given to me by my father ( Edward John Broughton Arscott) includes only four:-
John b14-06-1810, d 13-6-1881, m Charity Melhuish 3-04-1842, m Julianna Toby 23-03-1846. He was farm bailiff for Mr Force at Waterslade House and later farmed at Trickhayes. (both places now under Exeter airport). Charity died in childbirth.

Richard b 18-08-1813 at Heathfield, Broadclyst, d about 1861.

Ann b 24-01-1819.

Charles b 9-01-1822, d ?, m Charlotte Dart 3-09-1843.

Did Richard Arscott have a family outside of marriage? My father hinted there was a "dark side" to the family tree but would not talk about it.
Richard b 23-03-1779 was a yeoman labourer, probably at Heathfield, broadclyst ( now buried under a leisure centre). Later he was innkeeper at the Coach & Horses, Honiton Clyst.
My father's sister Winifred b13-10-1900 used to visit relations at Chittlehampton around 1945-1955. there are Arscotts there but I dont know they are related.

To Sweet Pea 193 and Macavity,

As promised Sweet Pea, I went and had a look at the records office, I didn't managed to do all the microfishe for Clyst Honiton, so I am unable to confirm that Richard had daughters Jane c1802, Sarah c1804 and Elizabeth c 1807 and Mary c1817, although I have got Mary on the 1851 census, but I will hopefully be able to check them next time I go. Just so that you are aware any thing dated that say "BEF" means thay are baptism dates and not birth dates or burial dates and not death dates. If they state the acutual date with out any prefix then I have sourced this info, if it just states "ABT" then a year, in means I beleive they exist, but have not confirmed the info... as yet!

Theres quite alot of it so be warned....

It appears that we are related. My family line goes thus:-

Richard + Sarah = John + (Richard, Ann, & Charles)

John + Charity/Juliana = George + (Ann, John, James, Emily, Samuel, Ellen & Walter) This Walter was involved with Wareham & Arscott Grocers, Blandford.

George + Martha = Edward (May, Emily,Winifred)

Edward (known as Ted, my father) + Amy = John (ie Macavity) + (Mary)

John + Ann = Peter + Gillian

My great grandfather was a brother of Walter. I am fairly sure my father visited the Arscotts at Blandford but he was not very active at visiting relatives.

Roger & Eily are my grandparents, they have three sons Peter, Nigel & James. I know that Roger kept in touch with some relatives in the Devon and Dorset area, but no one know who. Walter Arscott & ELizabeth Wareham and their family lived in Blandford (Forum) and ran a grocery shop (Arscott & Wareham). They lived at either one (or both) of these addresses at some point (some confusing census information): 23 Salisbury Road, Blandford or 63 Park Road, Blandford. There are also some documents that put Gina's name as Lena (no idea why). I have a photo of Walter & Elizabeth with their family whilst they were living in Salisbury Road, so i'm guessing around 1902.

I am not sure whether this input will be of any assistance but there were four Arscott's who attended West Buckland School near Barnstaple in Devon.

They were;

E D Arscott 1928 to 1929

R E Arscott 1960 to 1961

R T Arscott 1958 to 1963 and

J E Arscott 1960 to 1966.

The school records unfortunately do not enlarge upon their forenames, neither do they give any addresses or suggest any family relationship.
