Mary Martin Arter was born in Michaelmarsh, Hampshire in 1781. Her mother was Mary Arter. There is no fathers name mentioned in the parish records. I am looking for any information that will help me get further back and to why the child's middle name was Martin.

I believe that the father was a John ARTER born 1856 in East Tytherley, Hampshire, (four miles from Michelmersh) married a Mary MARTEN (sic) in 1775 at East Tytherley. I have details of this family.

Hi Norfbert,

I only found the death of John Arter a couple of weeks ago. If I have the right one, his daughter Mary Martin Arter married Thomas Goodchild at St.Denys Church Chilworth. I am directly descended from this couple and would dearly love any further information on the Arter family before this marriage.

The John Arter I have was buried at Michelmerch 02/01/1814 aged 61.

I found this thread whilst searching the net and registered up to Ancestry Aid to say hi. I'm also descended from Thomas Goodchild and Mary Arter. I only have info on one son, James Goodchild b1803, my ancestor. Do you have details on any other siblings? Thanks

According to the IGI Thomas and Mary had a son, Thomas, born 6 April 1800 and a daughter, Harriet, born 11 October 1807 both at Chilworth. As you will see from this thread Thomas the elder`s wife was Mary Martin ARTER. Her father was believed to be a John ARTER who died in Michelmersh (about four miles north of Chilworth) in January 1814 aged 61 suggesting he was born about 1753. I have him baptised May 1756 at East Tytherley but may be wrong. There were several ARTER families in Hampshire at this time. John ARTER of East Tytherley married Mart MARTIN at East Tytherley in 1775. Norfbert.

thats quick, thanks Norfbert for that info on the siblings - I saw the thread info, actually googled Chilworth - trying to see if there is any on-line details from St Denys (Chilworth) church - as there is for St John the Baptist (North Baddesley) Church and I found this thread! RU related to Arter or Goodchild?

Mary Martin Arter was the daughter of Mary Arter. There is no mention of a father in the Parish records.
