Trying to find birth details of William Woodruff (or other spellings). He says on all census from 1871 that he was born Glosssop, Derbyshire.
I have not found him before 1854 when he joined the HEIC and then transferred to British Army c 1859 and was stationed in India, Ireland, Malta, Dover and probably other places too. My brickwall for over ten years! ![]() Calmar |

Hi Starlight,
He gives his age as being born around 1838 + - 5 years on other census!! The earliest census I have him on for definite is 1871 in Cheriton, Kent, a soldier living there with his family of wife Mary, sons John and Frederick and daughter Ravina. 1881 he is a Labourer living at Lower Row, West Hougham, Dover. in 1891/1901 and death he is in Sheffield, Yorks. There is a William Woodroffe or Woodroofe, I can't remember how it is spelt from memory, living in Tideswell Derbyshire with a Martha and Samuel Yates. There is also a Robert Woodroof, Woodruff, living there. He is listed as a lodger in 1851 but nothing given for relationship between Martha and Samuel on 1841 census. On his marriage certificate he gives his father's name as Edward Woodruff. This marriage took place in Limerick when he was a soldier as he married a Mary Brown from there. Looking for an Edward on IGI gives one marriage to a Martha but it takes place in Chesterfield area from memory. I have even had a search done in Derbyshire records and they can't find a birth for him from 1829-1840! It really is a mystery. Regards, Calmar ![]() Last edited by calmar; 30-07-2008 at 03:27 PM. |

I have William and Martha Ann Woodroffes in my tree
My william was the father of Martha ann William was born 1867 in Leicestershire though, he married Martha (unknown) and they had three children - Martha Ann, alfred and william H all born in the Cleveland area I think William snr's father was also called william and he was born 1827 in wiltshire and married Alice from Yorkshire I know that doesn't fit in with yours, but I thought it was quite an unusual surname that it was worth mentioning I have many more details if required |

Thank you for replying but, as you say, I don't think your Woodruffe is connected to my illusive William Woodruff. He came from the Derbyshire aera or maybe even Chesterfield/Sheffield. One day I will find him!!
