Looking for info about Horace Turner born circa 1900 in Poplar. This is my husbands grandfather and his records are proving to be a bit of a mystery! Before he died he told his son that he was born in Hind Street/Grove in Poplar and that his mother was Priscilla Turner (nee Baker) and his father was William Turner. He also mentioned a sister called Grace and a brother that we do not not know the name of. Horace's death certificate states his date of birth as being November 1901.
We've managed to find a marriage record for a Priscilla Baker to an Alfred Thomas Turner (whose father was called William) in March 1891. It seems that Alfred died in June 1900. In the 1901 census Priscilla is shown living in Barking as a widow with her father in law (also widowed) William Turner and her two children Grace and Sidney. We are now unsure as to whether Alfred would have fathered Horace (Horace is not shown on the 1901 census) or if William fathered him. Interestingly William is also shown in the 1901 census as living with some of his children in Poplar (was it common for someone to appear twice on a census?). We requested a birth certificate for a Horace Turner registered in Hackney in Dec 1901 (as there were none for Poplar) but the parents were wrong. We have also bought another certificate for a Horace Turner born in September 1900 in Poplar and again the parents are wrong! If anyone out there has any ideas as to where to go next or any clues we would be ost grateful! Thanks. Last edited by turnerc; 31-03-2007 at 11:02 PM. |
