Hi staffy,
I have a sneaking suspicion that you've left something unsaid. ![]() As it happens, I'm looking for some Matthews in the Devonport/Stoke Damerel area of Devon. My 3xg-grandmother, Mary Ann Matthews, was reportedly (1851 census) born there about 1782. I've found a couple of Mary Matthews baptisms in the IGI who might be her, but without the middle name Ann it's difficult to be sure. One of the witnesses to her marriage in 1802 was a Thomas Matthews, whom I suspect may have been her father or brother, but I haven't been able to find any records for him in the IGI. There is a shoe & boot maker named Thomas Matthews in Devonport who shows up in a couple of trades directories around 1826 to 1830 - he could be the same person, as my 3xg-grandfather (Mary Ann's husband) also worked at this trade. Any information on this family (or suggestions for where to look next) would be gratefully received. Cheers - Tim |
