I have a John McLaugh(l)an living in Glasgow on the 1881 census. He is listed as born Ireland.
He was a witness at the marriage of my great grandparents, Mary Smith & Donald Biggs in 1882. Mary Smith was a visitor, born ENGLAND, staying with John McLaugh(l)an & his wife & family in 1881, so I am "assuming" he was the connection somehow to Mary Smith. On looking at the 1881 census for Glasgow for other MCLAUGH(L)AN`s there is a Michael McLaugh(l)an & his family not far away. He is a TAILOR by trade, born IRELAND. Now, this is a longshot! Mary`s father -THOMAS SMITH, TAILOR JOURNEYMAN(from her marriage registration). I have had much difficulty trying to locate the birth of Mary & marriage of Thomas to Jane Douglas. This has me wondering if Thomas & Jane were from Ireland & married there. My question to you! Do you have John & Michael McLaugh(l)an in your family? If so, do you know if they are father & son? Do you know where in Ireland they were from? Sorry, I am not actually a McLaugh(l)an researcher, but it may help me find my Thomas & Jane Smith & Mary! Hope that all makes sense to you? maggiem |
