Default Loveday: Bengal, India and Bath, Avon

Hi,

Lambert Richard Loveday, a Major General in the Bengal Army, born 1763 (don't know where) and died in 1843 - buried, apparently, in Bath Abbey.

Married Anne Louise D'Esterre in 1804 on the Island of St Helena, and had at least 6 children, including the unusually named Byam Martin Loveday - ring any bells?

I have managed to trace the D'Esterres back a long way but Lambert is where my Loveday line stops. Was he born in India? Why was he buried in Bath?

Although the above is specific rather than general to the Loveday name I would appreciate any information on Loveday families, maybe details of those will match dates and family names.

Thanks,

Roz

Roz

I am a G G G G grand daughter of Maj or Lt General Lambert Richard LOVEDAY.

1: Lambert’s Father was Richard LOVEDAY, Apothecary (of 40 years) of Hammersmith; b: about 1735 in Chiswick; d: 10/12/1812 aged 81 (discrepancies here with info from 2 different sources) and he married Maria/Mary BAINBRIGGE b: 24/08/1737 in Chiswick d: 12/05/1801 aged 63;

2: I do not believe Lambert was born in India, but am still researching to verify this;

3: Lambert had a brother, William of Brixham or Brixton;

4: there is a commemorative tablet to Richard in the Hammersmith church (no idea which one but the family has always been C of E as far as I am aware) paid for by Lambert;

5: Bath I am not sure about but I do know my G G G Grand Mother went to her parents in Bath in 1839;

6: I have not been able to find Richard’s forbears but have found Maria/Mary’ parents and grand parents (would appreciate your passing on any info you are able to find concerning Richard);

7: I have not been able to find any D’Esterre forbears past Anne Louisa (and would appreciate your passing on any info you have);

8: I found out via the web last week that Lambert had 2 more sons, Byam M and Rev Henry A and am not sure where they fit in with their siblings: William, Mary, Louisa Maria, Eliza Anne, Jessy Eliza and Julia Charlotte;

9: I am descended from Lambert and Anne Louisa's daughter Eliza Anne b: 23/01/1812 Java East Indies; c: 30/01/1813 Calcutta West Bengal; d: 29/06/1895 and married 12/02/1834 at Nastshow Nusseerabad John William HERRING (at death Lt Col J W Herring CB, ODM, Commander of the 37th Bengal NI);

10: I have General Lambert Loveday’s sword and scabbard and his portrait amongst other things which were given to my G G Grand Father by his Mother Eliza Anne Herring (nee LOVEDAY) to bring home to Australia.

11: I have done a family tree in XL (2 x A3 pages) and have 20+ A3 pages listing everything I have and the masses of sources. (the latter needs a lot of corrections, updating and finally proof reading).

12: I have found discrepancies between sources but some can be explained away by typo’s and legibility but other discrepancies would have to be checked further;

13: family gossip has Lambert as a Surgeon in the army but I have not been able to verify this via the web or elsewhere;

I have tons more info that may or may not be of interest but hopefully we can help each other in finding out as much as is possible.

Hoping to hear from you soon.

Regards

Helen
