I wonder if you've come across any info about two other Henleys who also emigrated to NZ in 1874-6. I don't think either of them is closely related to your Thomas Henley.

(1) My gg-uncle John HENLEY born 1844, Tailor of Brighton, Sussex, wife Clara Jane 25, daughters Lillian 4 yrs, Clarice 4 mths migrated to New Zealand on the “Hereford” (sailed 17 Apr 1874 arrived Lyttelton 14 Jul 1874). They settled in Christchurch and had at least 6 more children. Neither of their two sons reached adulthood but 5 of their daughters married (more info on http://www.cousinconnect.com/d/a/98087). I have no information on any of their descendants. John died 9/9/1897 and was buried at Linwood cemetery, Christchurch.

(2) Another unrelated John Henley born 1843, also a Tailor of Brighton, Sussex with his wife Amy 32, dau. Clara 11, migrated on the “Rangitiki” (sailed 14 Dec 1875 arrived Lyttelton 14 Feb 1876). I don't know where they lived, or whether they had any more children, but by 1894 he was listed as a missing person in the Salvation Army 'war Cry', and he died 21/10/1900, buried at Waipukurau.

Hello Stephen. Have been offline for quite a while, so apologies for not answering this sooner.
I do know of another HENLEY family who emigrated out here, but they are not connected as far as I can tell. One of them John (I think) was a driver in WW11 and his death is on the War Graves site, if I remember correctly.
I will take a look at your site and see if there are any connections to family that I have.
Cheers, Glen

Many thanks. There a couple of potential connections.
(1) 'My' Henley ancestors came from, Woburn, Bedfordshire, in the 18th century, and I have linked all the Woburn births, marriages, and deaths to the same family. However, these are all descedants of one Andrew Henley who married in Woburn in 1733. There is no trace there of his birth. Andrew is an uncommon first name in southern England in that period, and there were only a few that I could find in IGI (of course there may be others not indexed there). The only one of these that seemed at all likely was an Andrew Henley born in Stone-in-Oxney, Kent. So we could have a pre-1710 link in Kent.
(2) One branch of the family moved to Brighton, Sussex, in the 1800s and it is possible that one or other of them finished up in Kent, though I have no evidence. One possibility would be William Ralph Henley, born Woburn 1810, younger brother of my ancestor John Henley (who went to Brighton before 1836 and married there in 1838. The John Henley b1844 who went to Christchurch was his eldest son). William Ralph disappears entirely from the Woburn records: neither married nor died there. But he doesn't turn up in Brighton, either.
