Hi Anne,
I have the travelling golby's in my tree! Have we been in contact through the 'Genes' site? My GGgrandmother was Sarah Golby born 1850 to Thomas [1830] and Eliza Mills [1830] Thomas was one of many children to Emmanuel [also put as william ] c 1790 and Eleanor James 1795. Sarah married a Charles Knight in 1867 and his eldest brother Alfred 1834 [known as Frederick as well!] married Amy Golby [1835 ] in 1855 she was Thomas's younger sister and therefore Sarah's aunt!!! they kept it in the family!! It seems by the censuses I have that Emmanuel and Eleanor went down to the Brighton area with their 4 youngest children and stayed there until at least the 1861 then they disappeared and died!! who knows where! As you say they were all over the place as were arah's siblings, she seem to be the only one who stayed in the St Peter's district of Brighton, but then I don't think the Knights were true Romanys, although they were Hawkers and cab and fly drivers. Look forward to hearing from you if i haven't already Dawn |

Hi Dawn,
Yes we are already in contact! You kindly furnished me with lots of stuff I didn't know - eg Amy's suicide. Do you have Emmanuel/William's parents? They were recorded as William and Susannah Goolby (nee Arnold) in their marriage at Keymer, Sussex 30 Oct 1786. Both were described as travellers. I looked at the register fiche at Xmas as I was at my mum's but couldn't find any other Golbys. Next stop probably the Whatlington register. I am currently trying to piece together IGI records and censuses to see what I can link and give some base for further investigation. When I make some sense of it all I will let you know. Have you seen the following site - http://www.mybrightonandhove.org.uk/...h__0p114p.aspx This is the area Emmanuel and Eleanor lived in 1851/61. Anyway good to hear from you again - I'll be in touch soon hopefully. Best wishes, Anne |

Hi Anne
My Great Grandfather was Matthew Golby born 1880 Dorking. His parents were Henry Golby born c 1836 Dorking Surrey, and his wife was Caroline Beasley/Foreman. Henry's father was Thomas Golby born c 1803 Mayfeild, Sussex. They were all romany gypsies. Do we have any links? If so, I would love to hear from you. Julia |

Hi Julia,
Had a quick look on Genes but couldn't find you as a contact - must have been someone else with the same line. Anyway I have done quite a lot of digging on Ancestry etc and have identified a number of Golbys on censuses etc. I have your line but only as far back as Thomas 1803 for definite. However I do have a sneaky suspicion that he is related to my gx3 grandfather Emmanuel/William who was born in Whatlington. They may even have been brothers. Both he and Thomas had children around the same time born in Dorking with similar names. Emmanuel's father was William who married Susanna Arnold in 1786 in Keymer. If you want you can email me at alc_goytre@hotmail.com and I can give you more details. cheers, Anne |

Dear Anne. I have just started to trace my familly tree and I too have the Name Golby in my familly tree. My nan who is 82 (and still alive) father was Joseph Golby he was one of 9 children born to Emmanual Golby and Nelly Kettle. My nan does not remember her grand parents but believes that they came from devon. Joseph Golby (my nans father) married Besty Pidgely and they owned a piece of land in Admiral Road Park gate, Swanick. They were travellers who went hop picking, seling pegs etc. I wonder if our Golbys are related at all. I am trying to find Emmanual Golby and Nelly Kettle, who would be my great great grandparents, I believe he was a chimney sweep from what other members of the familly have been told. Would be interested to find out what you have. Mandy

Hi Mandy,
If they came from the south west I don't think that they are going to be the same family - but you never know. Being travellers they are notoriously difficult to trace. Do you have any other info - dates, names, places, siblings etc. cheers, Anne |
