Question Cargan

I am trying to trace members of the Cargan family.
James Cargan was born in Ireland in approximately 1853, although in the 1881 census he is "Cayan" while his sons are "Cargan". He became an iron worker in Witton Park, Durham and the family later migrated to Middlesbrough, Teesside - North Yorkshire.

All the best.....Al

Hello Shelley,

Thanks for your message.

My wife was born in Middlesbrough and her name was Cargan. We have traced the family back a bit but would like to find out a lot more.

Her dad was Robert William and his father shared the same name - eng born in Witton Park in 1881. His parents were James (b.1853 - Irelnad) & Mary Ann (b1856 - Ingleton) and he had brothers - Alexander (1872), James Thomas (187.2) and Richard (1883). Their father had siblings - William (1857), Mary Ann (1859), Isabella (1861) and Elleanor (1864). Their parents, in turn, were Alexander (b1833) and Susanna (b1826) Cargan - both from Ireland. The family had moved from Ireland to Witton Park by the 1871 census and the men were iron workers. After James (b1853) died the family moved to Middlesbrough (following the railway and steel industry, I imagine) and Mary Ann (1859) remarried.

We know a bit about James Thomas Cargan's descendants but virtually nothing about any of the other siblings in each generation. We'd love to find out from where in Ireland they originated.

I wonder if any of this matches any of your family's hitory. Cargan is not a very common name and so there's very likely a link.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,
Alan

Hello James,

Thanks for your message.

As you may have seen from one of my old posts, my wife was born in Middlesbrough and her name was Cargan. We have traced the family back a bit but would like to find out a lot more.

Her dad was Robert William and his father shared the same name - being born in Witton Park in 1881. His parents were James (b.1853 - Ireland) & Mary Ann (b1856 - Ingleton) and he had brothers - Alexander (1872), James Thomas (1872) and Richard (1883). After James (b1853) died, the family moved to Middlesbrough (following the railway and steel industry, I imagine) and Mary Ann (1859) remarried.

We know a bit about James Thomas Cargan's descendants but virtually nothing about any of the other siblings in each generation. We'd love to find out from where in Ireland they originated.

Cargan is not a very common name and so it's very, very possible that your family is related to the Cargans above. We'd really like to find out from where in Ireland they originated. My wife also remembers an Uncle Jack who lived somewhere near Canon Street, Middlesbrough (no longer there) but doesn't know how he was related. She believes he was a Merchant Seaman. She knows her dad and her uncle were often at Jack's house and that she passed it frequently herself. Unfortunately, there are no longer any of her family to ask. Anything you can tell us will be great.

Regards,
Alan
