Hi Maxwell,
I have Champion family in Bridgwater, certainly from Jan 1749/50.
I believe they have a connection prior to that to North Petherton, but of how long a duration I do not know.

I have Edward Champion m Jane MOORE North Petherton 1726, and their first child Abraham CHAMPION bap North Petherton 1727, with William the next child, bap North Pethrton 1730. From there the family ' disappears' for several years, before turning up in Bridgwater, where daughter Hannah is bap in 1737. My family descends from the first son Abraham who married Hannah LIDE (aka Lyde) in Jan 1749/50 Bridgwater. I descend through Abraham's son William, who was bap Jan 1761 Bridgwater, and married Honour EDWARDS Glastonbury 1777 (yes, he was really young!!). Their first child was William bap Glastobury 1779 (from memory)...but then moved......they turn up again in Sherborne Dorset, where sons, Abraham, Robert & Thomas and daughter Mary are baptised. Honour is buried at Wyke Regis Dorset in 1802, and William....appears to move! Abraham and Robert move to Jersey Channel Islands, where both marry, have children and die. My ggggrandfather was this Abraham, and it was his son John who moved to Australia - and back - then back to Australia...(oh for a less mobile group!!)

This family was VERY strongly involved in Brick and tile making. Abraham bn 1727 was certainly involved in the industry, William and his 'brother' Abraham were both brick and tile makers, and Williams two sons, Abraham and Robert also carried on the family tradition. William's brother Abraham remained in Bridgwater and had his own brickworks, which eventually became the Brown Brickworks through marriage. Descendants of this Champion family remained in Bridgwater for generations.

I hope that this proves to be a connection. I would love to be in contact.
I am contactable at bbqman@bigpond.net.au
