Looking for more details on the Churchill Family - I have a Mary Churchill who married an Abraham Skinner 1764 Colaton Raleigh Devon. If anyone has a connection to the Churchill family or any information it would be great to hear from you. There has been a story passed down through the family that our Churchills are related to Winston Churchill but no doubt this is just one of those stories and no truth. Haven't been able to find anything yet. Julie

Winston Churchill's full name was Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill. The Churchill was added to the Spencer surname between 1739 and 1766 with George Spencer-Churchill son of George Spencer and Caroline Russell. George Spencer was the son of Charles Spencer and Elizabeth Trevor. Charles Spencer was the son of Charles Spencer b 1673 and Ann Churchill b 28 February 1681/1682. Ann Churchill was the daughter of John Churchill and Sarah Jennings who was the first Lord Marlborough.

Hence Sir Winston's relationship to Lady Diana Spencer, later Princess Diana. The christian name Diana flows right through the Spencer and Spencer-Churchill family.

I have a fairly complete tree for the Spencer and the Churchill Family although not complete as yet as it is very large going back on the Spencer side to the early 1500's down to the last century.

The Spencer-Churchill and the Churchill family is vast so it is a strong possibility that the family history has some truth in it.

Thanks for that information Kate, someone did get back to me fairly recently to tell me that my Mary Churchill was born 1765 in Venn Ottery and her parents were John Churchill 1736 - 1818 born Harpford and Mary Maddock 1735 - 1815 Venn Ottery. They were married 21.6.1759 in Harpford. I am still no further with making any connection to Winston's family though. Julie
