    Default Sands from Sligo

I am interested in the Sands/Brennan families of Sligo, in particualr

    William Sands c 1840

    Mary Brennan c1840

    Louis/Lewis Sands 1866

    Maryann Sands 1869

    William Sands (Jr) 1860

MaryAnn was born in Sligo, but I have not found any Irish data on her brother or parents.

The possiblity exists from family legend that Ballymena or similar sounding place figures into the family history.

William, Lewis and William arrived in Canada in 1880 without Maryann or Mary Brennan. Lewis was put in an orphanage in Canada and it is unknown where the 2 Williams went. Lewis' marriage certificate and subsequent census' show him as Methodist, but there is a story that a priest clipped him in the ear when he was young and he left the Catholic Church.

    Hey garynrho

I was born in Sligo and now live in London. I've recently started some research on my family and have found various useful tools including the website for the Irish Family History Foundation (IFHF) http://www.brsgenealogy.com.

Searching the index is free but viewing the records costs 5 euro. Don't know what that is in $C.

Anyhow, I've had a quick look for you and here's what I have found. Note that I am not guaranteeing that this is all accurate and note the variations in the surname spelling. Also note that the indexed records are not complete. There is a tab on each county record sets (e.g. Sligo) that indicates how complete the records are and for what religious denomination. I can't find the marriage and the death records are sparse at the moment. The records are being updated constantly.

Church Baptism Indices (17 in total to the period 1899)

    1779 Sandys Catherine

    1781 Sandys David

    1783 Sandys John

    1788 Sandys Mary

    1795 Sandys Charles

    1797 Sandys Bridget

    1800 Sandys Ann

    1808 Sandys William

    1820 Sands William James

    1832 Sandes William

    1857 Sandes William

    1859 Sandes Edward

    1861 Sandes John

    1863 Sandes David

    1868 Sandes Lewis ***

    1869 Sandes Mary Ann ***

    1875 Sanndas Matilda

Pure speculation here but perhaps the William Sandes 1832 in red is the father and the subsequent births in blue excluding Matilda may all be offspring.

I have looked at two records for you indicated thus(***), at my expense and can give the following additional information:

    Lewis Sandes

    Date of Baptism/Birth: 07/04/1868 (DDMMYYYY)

    Address: Ballymote

    Parish/District: Emlefad & Kilmorgan

    Gender: Male

    County: Co Sligo

    Denomination: Civil Parish

    Father: William Sandes

    Occupation: Labourer

    Mother: May Z

    Sponsor 1: None

    Sponsor 2: None

    Mary Ann Sandes

    Date of Baptism/Birth: 01/03/1869 (DDMMYYYY)

    Address: Ballymote

    Parish/District: Emlefad & Kilmorgan

    Gender: Male

    County: Co Sligo

    Denomination: Civil Parish

    Father: William Sandes

    Occupation: Labourer

    Mother: May Z

    Sponsor 1: None

    Sponsor 2: None

Therefore, the address of Ballymote (one of the larger towns in the county of Sligo) does sound similar to Ballymena. Note that Ballymena does not exist in Sligo (a north west county in the Republic) but is in County Antrim (a north east county in Northern Ireland) and are quite a distance apart.

Shout back if you want more guidance.

May need to call in a favour on some Canadian research I am stuck on.

Also, I have saved the two birth records as a word doc but can't attach it at the moment as it is to large for the size restriction on here. Will review this if you want to see them.

    Cheers for now!

    Right ho!

Haven't sorted out the size of the attachment yet.

Note that the mother's name is listed as it appears on the records set so I'm not sure yet what 'May Z' is meant to be, unless the maiden name was unknown or not recorded at the time. On some of the records I have reviewed for my own research, the maiden name is normally listed.

Secondly, not quite sure why the Denomination is listed as 'Civil Parish'. I tend to be looking at Catholic records for my own research. I have a book that lists all the Townlands and Parishes in Sligo. Emlefad and Kilmorgan are both Civil Parishes in their own rights. They are united to form the Catholic Parish of that joint name. In current catholic records it appears now be known as Ballymote Parish brackets (Emlefad & Kilmorgan). This suggests that the records are Catholic but care here as the C of I or presbetarian parish may have followed the same boundary in Co. Sligo at the time.

As both these records are post 1865 when civil registration commenced in Ireland for births you can probably request a copy of the birth certificates if you feel that these records are correct for your research.

    Hope this helps you more!

Wow, this looks very promising. thank you so much for this information.

The birth dates that I had for Lewis from a Canadian Census give Feb 7, 1866 and his tombstone is Mar 10, 1866, so your date certainly isn't far off. I believe literacy could have been an issue.

Mary Brennan as the mother of Mary Ann came from IGI Batch Number: C012011 confirmations, and Lewis (louis) gave her name on his Marriage registration in Canada. However, there are no other Sands in this register.

I would be glad to help with any Cdn research you have. I have just upped to a 3month on Ancestry and there has recently been a lot of releases of Canadian material.

If you would like to send me the attachments directly, you can send it to garyrho at live dot ca (like that isn't too obvious!).

The Euro-Cdn x is 1 Euro = 1.5 Cdn today, so if I can do anything on this side of the pond to assist you, please let me know.

I've sent the attachment. I assume the e address is garyrho without the 'n' in the middle per your user name on here.

If you've got some spare cash, you could risk looking at the other births I indicated to see whether they are linked. These other ones may list the mother's maiden name but it can get expensive. I forked out loads of money already. I probably could have paid for a trip to Sligo to manually review the parish records myself. )

I think you're asking about my great-grandfather and his family. What you have submitted is consistent with family stories I have heard for years.
