According to her death certificate, my great great grandmother, Frances Jane Maitland was born to John Maitland and Jane Mitchell Hill (possibly Mitchellhill). Her birthplace on various censuses is Selkirk. As the age she gives varies widely, I reckon she was born between 1818 and 1825. Would love to find any record of her before 1841.
Have you tried the IGI on the family search site? or perhaps the Hugh Wallis site they may be of some help to you. They are free sites to use, also you could try Scotlands People however this is a paying site - but may be worth looking at to see if it is suitable for you.

Thanks, I hadn't heard of the Hugh Wallis site. I have spent many days researching in the Scotlands People Centre in Edinburgh - and fear that it and the IGI site have no information more to yield.
