Thread: Turnbull/Oliver/Goodchild

I am interested in the following names particularly in Sprouton, Jedburgh and Cavers:-



Turnbull, Oliver, Goodchild.





In particular, I am looking for the father of Jane Oliver born c1892. Her mother was Agnes Turnbull late Oliver who married Ernest Charles Goodchild on the death of her first husband.

Yes I have found him and his occuption is not the same as the stories I have been told unless he changed it. Now I need to find his death to see if he really was a jockey killed by a horse.

Hi Starlight. I was recently in the Jedburgh area and at Denholm cemetary saw a stone: Joseph Turnbull Oliver, hewer, who died 27.3.1900 aged 63 years also Helen Little his wife who died 7.1.1908 aged 74 years. There are quite a few Olivers and Turnbulls here:

Thanks so much for this. It is unbelievable how many of my names are here. It will take some sorting out though. I can see some that I can see are deffinates by the date and spouses names

Hi Starlight. So glad this was of use to you. I was able to find MI's for people in NZ and USA elsewhere in the Borders as well so it was a very useful trip. It's almost as exciting finding these as your own stuff! You might find the Borders Family History Society website useful on http://www.bordersfhs.org.uk/ Their forum is somewhat sluggish and I've provided info to it with no feedback at all, but they do have published lists of MI's for sale. I have one or two photos from Ancrum (eg the Joseph Turnbull Oliver one) and elsewhere if you are interested. As I recall (and ignored as it wasn't MY Oliver, I think there were Turnbull Oliver's at Edgerston, a wee village on the A68 not far North of Carter Bar. Next time I'm up I'll have a look. Thanks for the link. I think I will have to find a few more deaths before I think of purchasing any of the instriptions. It could work out quite expensive otherwise. The ones I have so far mostly died in Yetholm and Cavers.

At the moment I am stuck with the Olivers until I get a marriage certificate.

Hi. I did get one Jane Oliver - on a stone at Oxnam - shown as wife of Robert Hastie. But it showed she died at Edgerston Lodge Jany 4th 1861 aged 82 years so couldn't be your Jane. I found quite a few Olivers at Oxnam. Ed
