ancesTree Anyone help me to use FamilyTree software WITHOUT internet?

I have installed the cd-rom to my computer and loaded masses of information. So far, I can only see the way to Copy Reports or Trees to Word.

Not having the internet at home, I am unable to share my interactive records with interested parties and I fear that all my work will be lost into Cyberspace when I turn up my toes.

Anyone solved this riddle?

dont know familyTree software but all other family history software gives you the option of "exporting your tree". you can then download this to a CD or memeory stick. if you make a habit of doing this at least once a month it acts as a back up if anything goes wrong on your computer as well as allowing you to send to other people etc.

i feel sure this must be possible with this software too

Names I am researching
Walker (liverpool) davidson, mccullough, mcdowell grills, wilson and thornton (ireland) wookey (somerset) houstoun (worcester and scotland), jeffcoate and iliffe (midlands) byron, bailey and edwards (cheshire and staffs)

Hello WelshLady,

Thanks, I'll try. Will it still be interactive? or in a report form? Sorry to ask such basic questions.

Regards, Pam

Hi Pam

I've used FTM 2006 software for a couple of years now and have it on my laptop as well as the other two PCs in the house. When I do a 'back-up' to a CD from the laptop - EVERY SUNDAY - I then do a 'restore' of the information onto the two PCs. A sort of 'belt and braces' approach I suppose.

If you're using a 'remote' computer for internet purposes, as I presume you are - otherwise you wouldn't be posting here - you would need to have the software installed on it as well if you wanted access to it when online. The 'owner' may not sanction that however.

I don't, necessarily use the program to its fullest but, from the 'Reports' option I create and print off 'Family Group Sheets' as I need them for my visits to the Records Office in Edinburgh and search there for the missing information.

What you could try doing, starting with the farthest back relative you have, is creating a Genealogy Report in Rich Text Format (.rtf) - which is one of the options you get - rather than in Word and save them to your PC. Copy that file to a flash-drive or CD and then take it with you to the 'remote' PC and you can then access it to copy and paste into, and/or attach the complete file to your messages.

I hope that's not confused you? I'm not a computer 'geek' or anything but have found that the above ideas do work.

Aye mair questions than answers in a world where the past was a different place - that cannae be revisited!!

Hi Pam – Hi Chiad, (that’s an interesting name – where does it originate?)

I've used FTM 2006 software for a couple of years now and have it on my laptop as well as the other two PCs in the house. THREE!! You’re just plain greedy! When I do a 'back-up' to a CD from the laptop - EVERY SUNDAY - I then do a 'restore' of the information onto the two PCs. Wise move. A sort of 'belt and braces' approach I suppose.

Thank you for your suggestions and comments some of which reflect my current understanding.

If you're using a 'remote' computer for internet purposes, as I presume you are - otherwise you wouldn't be posting here - you would need to have the software installed on it as well if you wanted access to it when online. The 'owner' may not sanction that however.

Background: The software was a freebie via a Sunday paper and works fine on my own PC at home. Following WelshLady’s advice, I 'exported' to my memory stick but find that I cannot use it elsewhere unless that computer has the software loaded. As I’m normally at my local library, this would not be permitted.

Question: My daughter does have the Internet (though very little time to help me) – If I take my cd-rom and install it onto her computer, would I be able to load my ‘Exported’ file info from the USB there? That should then be fully interactive, like my original?

I don't, necessarily use the program to its fullest but, from the 'Reports' option I create and print off 'Family Group Sheets' as I need them for my visits to the Records Office in Edinburgh and search there for the missing information. OK, that part I understand.

What you could try doing, starting with the farthest back relative you have, is creating a Genealogy Report in Rich Text Format (.rtf) - which is one of the options you get - rather than in Word and save them to your PC. Copy that file to a flash-drive (is that the same as a memory stick? ) or CD and then take it with you to the 'remote' PC and you can then access it to copy and paste into, and/or attach the complete file to your messages. Yes, I’ll have to try that – it’s not the complete answer of course, but it gives a means of passing on info to my nearest & dearest.

Like you, I favour the Belt & Braces approach; my fear is that a computer crash (or a personal crash!) would mean that all my carefully assembled info would have to be re-input. In all likelihood, no-one would bother.

I hope that's not confused you? I'm not a computer 'geek' or anything but have found that the above ideas do work.

Loved your quote.
Regards, Pam

Hi Pam

'Chiad Fhear' is from the Gaelic and translates (loosely) as 'first one'. When we bought our house some 35 years ago we wanted an unusual name for it. Needless to say we're still here!

The THREE PC's are a progression. The oldest one is 'steam driven' and the laptop (almost) state-of-the-art ... at least it is for this (almost) OAP

Senior moment there Pam ...

A flash-drive an a memory stick are one and the same!

Your 'freebie' may NOT be the 'Full Monty' FTM program and so some of the options may not be available.

I think the 'Export' option creates a GEDCOM and that can be uploaded to your daughter's PC quite as easily as a Back-up once you've install the program ... I think! Someone's going to read this and correct me.

Sometimes these 'freebies' only let you load the program once ... so try it first. If it does work then you should be fully 'interactive'!

Don't let the toes curl!
