William MacDougall was born according to the information I have in 1854.He was a fisherman.
He married my Grandmother in 1914 in Grimsby Lincolnshire. On his marrage cert it says his father was John a painter,he was 60 and she was(Mary Ann Briggs) 43. He died in Grimsby in 1923, grandmother registered it saying his age was 69. I cant find him on any census, not knowing where he came from. Any suggestion anyone as what my next step should be.....please. Sheila |

Hi Sheila
It's a hard one - especially considering his name could be mispelled on Census, and his occupation - he could have come from anywhere, as I'm sure you already know ![]() Just some ideas perhaps to try: When he married 1914, was he said to be a bachelor or a widower? And have the witness' been identified? The address he gave on the marriage? Electoral Rolls, just prior to his marriage? Is there any family memory of him having a particular "accent" (ie: Scottish, particular regional English?) Cheers AnnieB |

Thank you for your reply AnnieB, it sure is a hard one.My grandmother"ran"of with MacDougall and had seven children together before they married, she said she was a widow..a fib..and he a bachelor. They were at the same address for years, this from electoral rolls.
I have two cousins who swear he was a Scot, but they never knew him.? I think he must have been at sea on the 1901 census as granny was with their first daughter and another one born to her first husband,as a houskeeper. Yes you are right about the spelling as some of the children use McDougall, but it is MacDougall on the marriage certificate. Thanks again Sheila |

Hi Sheila,
I have already looked for his birth in Scotland using different name variants without luck. |
