i am trying to research my family tree all i know is that my mum is of romany gypsy descent and the surname is frater all the family was from the islington area of london i dont know how to go about it i have a bit of history about the family but not much can any one help thanks.

Why don't you post what information you do have, and then perhaps people might be able to enlarge on it. There are some very able people on this site, who are only to happy to help you, as I have found out personally, so post what you have, and see how things turn out.

the first thing to do is write down all the information you do know eg parents names aunts and uncles cousins etc with any dates you have . do you have your parents birth certificate or marriage details . do you know when they lived in any particular areas of the country. all these things help narrow down searches and then post what you do know and people will be only to willing to help you.

	Names I am researching Walker (liverpool) davidson, mccullough,mcdowell grills, wilson and thornton (ireland) wookey (somerset) houstoun (worcester and scotland), jeffcoate and iliffe (midlands) byron, bailey and edwards (cheshire and staffs)
