Default newbie help needed

Hello to you all.

i am totaly new to all this, and havent a clue where to start,

i want to make a family tree but i dont have much to go on. my mom passed away a few years ago and i wish i had asked questions befor she passed. she was even a heir to some money in 1997 but i can find no paper work from the company, who contacted her, as this would have helped me discover my past. all i know is my mom and dad. (who i have not seen in years) and me and my sisters want to trace our tree as we dont know anything about our parents familys.

i bet im your worst nightmare on here, (very sorry about this)

i know my moms details but not her maiden name and theres a possibe 3 of them.

not sure how all this works, do you need her name posted and dob ?

thanks for you time

Tony

Hello Tony,

Firstly, on your's or your sister's birth certificate, your Mom's maiden name should be on there.

If you check that first and her surname was Ward, I think I may have found the right Jean Edith, but I don't want to give you any information yet as I may be sending you up the wrong tree.

Hi Tony

Not sure if I can help, but here are a few suggestions. You need a few birth/marriage/death certificates to get you started. Do you know how to go about getting these?

Do you have any idea where or when your mum married your dad? For example, did she ever mention her wedding anniversary (which at least would give you a date). Are there any old photos anywhere which may have info on the back - for example where they were taken?

What you really need is her marriage certificate (as you will have got her maiden name from your birth certificate.) This will give the name of her father and his occupation, ditto for your father. It may be that you will have to send for several marriage certificates before you get to the tight one, but if you can narrow down the area, and go to the local register office where the marriage took place, they are usually really helpful, and will steer you in the right place.

Ask all your close family for every bit of info they have - you may find there are some surprising family links hidden there, that no one has realised. For example, do they recall visiting people who were close to your mum. What happened when she died - who cleared her house? Were any documents left? Who might have them?

It would also be worth doing a search to find out something about that murder as there is likely to be some history in the paper - journalist reports can be a great source of information. Do you know where it took place? If so then the local library can be a help to track down any reports.

Don't forget any friends you know of your parents. Your mum may be gone but are any of her friends still around? She may well have told them things that she didn't tell you, especially around her legacy. Its well worth contacting them. Where did she bank? Are her bank records still available (ie could you find who paid the money from the legacy to her - that would give you a contact to ask - I am not up on this and it may have been a long time ago but is worth considering). Did your mum leave a will?

Happy hunting - and welcome to this very addictive hobby!
