Songbird.

He stood on the roof, and he sang a sweet song
It rang out so clear, and it rang out so strong.
He sang his sweet song, and he sang it again
And over and over I heard his refrain.
So joyful his music, so sweetly he sang.
I listened as over the gardens it rang.

The song that he caroled burst forth from his throat
Falling into the air, like a jewel every note,
And each time he sang it his tune was the same,
Precisely in order his chosen notes came,
And each time it finished for a moment he'd pause,
I fancied he waited to hear some applause.

Then after a break he would draw breath, and then
Begin his recital all over again.
And during these pauses it seemed that I heard
From a distance the sound of an answering bird,
From nearby woods, faint like an echo it came
It was almost his song, although not quite the same.

I pondered the reason for this tuneful display,
Were they gossiping over the news of the day ?
Or was it a love song they sang to and fro,
Fond messages sent on the breeze - I don't know.
Back and forth came the verses, each singer on cue.
No other birds sang. Were they listening too ?

But I had to leave, there were things to be done.
When I went outside later the songbird had gone.
So empty the rooftop where earlier he stood,
No song to enchant came from garden or wood.
I watch and I listen each day, but in vain,
For my songbird has never sung for me again.

Feel free to write another poem.

And havn't you done well so far,

Anny - a great poem from you
And another from you Pam
And here's me trying to think of words
That rhyme.......like Wham or Spam ?

The brain well it's gone kind of numb
And Bill, he sort of flipped
When he filled the car with petrol
For our Liverpool trip !

We might get there -will we get back ?
Is that a risk to take ?
Indefinite stay with Mum-in-law ?
I wouldn't crack up - I'd break !!

And so would she, poor woman
Having us descend on her
Not knowing when 'normality'
Would to her house return.

So do we take a chance and go ?
Or do we stay at home ?
If we don't go no doubt Bills Mum
Will have a minor moan !

Oh eck I dont know what to do
And now it looks like rain !
My washings out - I hope it's dry
Ain't going away a pain ?

I'm in a quandry what to pack
My brolly and a mac
Are a must......might need a cardi
Keep the chill from my back

Jumpers ? Better put some in
And t-shirts -just in case
Might even pack some sun cream
'Factor something' - for my face

Summer skirt, some trousers
Sandals, trainers, and socks
A fleece maybe ? It should be summer
But I'm cold......don't know 'bout you.

Might even need a woolly hat
Oh, sunhat - take that too
Be covered for all seasons
Pack lots - not just a few

Oh dear this rhyme is tragic
I think I'd better go
So till I get back - bye folks !
(Unless we stay at home !)

Hope you have a good time Chris
We think we'll be ok
For petrol - 'no need to worry'
Least so Bills brother says.

The 'family dinner' that we thought
We'd have to dress up for
It seems has already been had
Thank goodness, that's for sure !

Bill needn't pack a 'proper shirt'
Or 'smart' trousers and shoes
Jeans, trainers and sweatshirt
Will do.........wear what we choose.

Cos the idea of this visit
Is not a 'fashion' parade
We're going up to see Bills Mum
And say 'Happy Birthday'

No doubt she'll turn her nose up
At the car not squeaky clean
It''s had a wash but nothing else
And we're not seeing the queen !

Expect I'll have to get the iron out
For Bills jeans and sweatshirts
Else something will be said - but
Strangely not about my skirts !

Ho hum.......now I'll be rather glad
When we get on our way
So for now I'll say 'Cheerio'
I think I'm back Thursday
