I've hit a great big stumbling block
In my family history tree Pendereds ? Think I've got them all Must have or where would they be ? I've chased them round for a long time They didn't escape me then I captured them and locked them up Some time...........oh way back when. Haddons ? Yes, I've got them too Well all that I can find And Smiths ? Best not to mention them Else I'll go out my mind !! My files are full and bulging With names and photographs I'm now fed up with all of them At the end of my 'history' path ! What can I do if I find no more ? Does it come to a full stop ? What do folk do when they get this far And hit this stumbling block ? Do they, like me, get right fed up And put it all away And wonder why they started it And the price they've had to pay ? With sleepless nights and dreaming Of folk who've long since died And every waking hour spent searching For an elusive bride And census sheets that go to prove That Arthur, Bert or Sam Just weren't the chaps you thought they were And you've followed the wrong man ? The endless seeking, night and day Till eyesights growing dim And Great Grandfather disappeared There's just no trace of him And endless ag. labs, shoemakers Horsekeepers and housemaids All called Tom or Elsie (Or was that their middle name ?) My minds just like a ball of wool All tangled and in knots Cos folk I think I've just discovered I find I've already got !! It's no good, must call it a day Stand back and tell myself That just for now, maybe it's best I leave my family on the shelf ! ![]() |

Smiths ? Oh Chris I can't cope
I've looked and looked some more They're all called John or William I've only found four !! The rest although I thought were mine I found that I was wrong Just when I thought I'd got them To someone else they did belong ! My head was buzzing round and round Cooks, Evans, Francis Jones ! No date for him except a year You should have heard me groan ! He married Agnes, I was told And Agnes I thought I'd got From little Souldrop village Sadly, her it was not ! Least I don't think it was her The dates they just don't match Course -info I've got could be wrong She might be one of my batch. I did find out that little Doris Whos Mum died very young Was 'fostered' to her grandad The Poor House paid him a sum. For some months money was paid out And then it stopped - but why ? And was she in the Workhouse ? Can't find her Dad - Bill Knight. A rellie told me a family fall out Over business deals Caused Bill Knight to be sent away So far overseas. Australia it's said he went Leaving wife and kids behind They were to follow later But then his wife........she died ! The children, Doris and her brothers And her sister, Min Did they go into the workhouse ? Before grandad stepped in ? It's all a muddle, I'll never know There's no-one left to ask Poor Mum she's been quite poorly So its become quite a task ! Hence the need to shelve it Leave it all for a while And put my family, all of them On my shelf in a neat pile. One day, I'll look at them again With fresh eyes I might see Who married who, what happened To these folk who made me 'me' ![]() |

Oh poor Chris , it's such a shame no sympathy you've found!
There's no-one to commiserate, there's nobody around. You know why that is, don't you, its because of that new site, We're all so busy, back and forth between the two each night, Limericks and so on, games and recipes and all Its a wonder that we find the time to visit here at all . And what is more, that Starlight's brought her word games back again, So when I do come here at last I have to work the brain, Sitting here frustrated trying to find a blasted link And giving up because its's just impossible , I think, Only to find, five minutes later, someone smarter than I am Has posted the right answer, now it looks so obvious - damn ! ( But should you read ths, Star, please take it with a pinch of salt because you know I love your games, if I'm dim it's not your fault ). But anyway, the reason for this poem was just to say That it grieves me greatly, Chris, to find you in this sorry way And I'm sending lots of sympathy, you can feel the vibes, I trust. Just wrap yourself in cotton wool, and rest, don't cook or dust. I hope that you'll feel better soon, poor face no longer sore So you can be yourself again, our cheerful Chris once more. And as for our friend Starlight, she who does not complain I send wishes that she also will soon be as right as rain. anny. |

Chris has been on holiday
I asked her where she went A place called Lazarotti I'm not sure that's what she meant. She sent me a postcard Put on a foreign stamp To find a postbox was too hard So she packed it in her case She posted it in England But is nowhere to be seen She could have added another stamp But Chris was far too mean. Sorry Chris - only joking, but couldn't get the end to rhyme. ![]() |
