Grand National day - I backed a horse
Called 'Thisthatandtother'
(It was a phrase I often used
Picked it up off my mother !)

Hundred to one....good odds I thought
And parted with my money
I'd be quids in - lucky old me
But no.....it wasn't funny !

Bill backed two - called -I don't know
But I know they didn't win
This betting larks a waste of time
Don't exactly make me grin !

But this did......in the post I got
Photo of Ralph -grans brother
Well three in fact - from my sixth cousin
Wait till I tell my mother !!!

She says she remembers the family
Of my cousin number 6
The Birds, the Hunts.....well all of them
No more walls now made of bricks !

I've beaten them........well almost
Knocked them to the ground
But there'll always be a few lurking
Not wanting to be found.

But for today I'm a happy bunny
With Great Uncle Ralph on view
Who cares about my horse losing
Well I don't............would you ?

Has summer come a bit early ?
It's bloomin' hot out there
I've had to come in to cool down
Flop down in a comfy chair.

I've fiddled about with a plant or two
Ordered a few more seeds
Oh eck.....ain't planted what I've got
I'll have more than I really need !

Oh well, what the 'eck, sun's shining
Bill's gone for a pint or three
Kids are out.......where I don't know
So at home alone......it's me !

I've got my book all set to read
'Bout Domestic Service life
The sort of life my Gt. Gran lived
Before she became a wife.

Mind you she already was a Mum
Just left the kids behind
For her Mum and Dad to take care of
(She wasn't the marrying kind)

Least that's what I like to think
Though could be a different tale
Four kids ! Maybe the fathers
Said 'Marriage ? Oh no.....no way !'

Still eventually she settled down
Adding two more to her brood
The first four ? They stayed with their Gran
And Grandad.......never moved.

Gt. Gran couldn''t help but see them
The village was so small
I wonder......did they know her ?
And did she visit at all ?

Well thats something I'll never know
My Gran kept very hush
She knew I'm sure but in those days
It would have caused a fuss.

Thank heaven I say for Auntie Flo
(She married gt.grans son
Born after she was married)
Aunt Flo knew everyone.

Nothing got past Auntie Flo
But sadly now she's gone
But she told all to my old Mum
And Mum passed it along.

So now my family history files
Can tell a tale or two
If its not the Pendereds its the Barnetts
Oh dear......if only they knew.............

Elusive Dream

High upon a silver cloud
All the dreams run wild
Every single lovely thought
The birth of one's own child

The silver cloud hangs so low
Then it runs away
Like a giant yo-yo
It swings around each day

Sometimes it comes within my reach
Just to stretch and touch
But then it floats away again
It really is too much

If only it would come to me
Enough to hold it tight
I'd grasp it firmly with both hands
and grip with all my might

I'd love it dearly with all my heart
A blessing it would be
For all the silly dreams I have
This one means most to me

But this elusive dream of mine
Doesn't want to come
It doesn't want to stay with me
I will never be a Mum

Today I thought was going to be hot
I said so............what a fool
I finished up with my cardi on
Cos it really turned quite cool.

Gardening ? I thought ....well, no
Maybe another day ?
I'd family tree stuff needed doing
What more can I say ?

I've sat here going through my Smiths
Clark ? Is he mine ? or am I wrong ?
Then I found Hannah Cleavely !
Now where did she spring from ?

Seems she married a Dunkley
Somewhere round 1710
Apart from that I don't know much
I must check her out again.

I googled all the shoe factories
From the town where I come from
Not many shoes made there nowadays
But least the buildings haven't gone.

Oh dear me.....now I'm rambling
I just go on and on
Maybe it's age , do you reckon ?
Or have my marbles at last gone ?

Bloomin' kids - I'm that fed up !
They won't even wash a coffee cup !
Our lad said last night -'don't get tea
I'll get my own....for my girlfriend and me

And so they did.......and what a mess
No plates left - (I was stressed)
No dishes - they'd had ice cream
They'd ate all ours......(was this a dream ?)

Dream it wasn't ....there this morning
Were all the plates .....I was still yawning
Dishes....glasses, coffee cups
Spoons.......not one thing was washed up !

Sorry.....says he I'll do it when
I finish work at half past ten
Did he do it ? Oh no fear
The door knocked - his girlfriend was here !

I told them both - 'it just won't do
This messiness from the both of you
If you want a plate or dish - well tough
They're in the sink.....I've had enough !'

They went out......the other lad
Sometimes I think is just as bad
Someone he knows needs help painting
He's off ......my poor walls still are waiting.

Some weeks ago he said he'd do
Some painting on the stairs and loo
I got the paint.....it still sits there
In the cupboard 'neath the stairs.

Then he brought his washing down
In the machine it went - I frowned
It churned away - then his mate phoned
Off he went......I called .....'Just a mo !!!!'

He'd gone.....the washing swirled about
All done.....was I to hang it out ?
Well no, I thought.......he'd old enough
To do this kind of domestic stuff !

So Im doing Quiche for me and Bill
The two boys can do what they will
Then I'll grab the sofa with a box of chocs
And ignore the shout of 'Where's me socks?'

Mary...that echoes the conversation me & some of the mum's at school were having today.....it seems I'm not the only one who has kids that think everything is done by magic & they don't need to lift a finger!!!

Wouldnt be so bad if they were younger Helen. One is 16 and a half and wants to leave and live with his girlfriend (who incidently when tackled about not clearing up after herself replied 'my Mum always does is' -she's 18 by the way), and the other lad we've got is 17..........18 this November, know the sort - 'I can get a job tomorrow' but is unemployed and middle name should be narcissuss..............lol

Thank goodness .....normality reigns
Whatever 'normal' is
But the kids are now behaving
Happy they've had me in a tizz !
One of them's out with his girlfriend
The other helped someone out
Shifting stuff from a pub that's closed
'Want anything ?' I heard him shout !

There's furniture - I need some for his room
There's a freezer - four foot wide
Bill's face lit up.......he's ordered half a pig
Our freezer it won't fit inside !
So Bill nods his head 'We'll have that
And get the garage cleared
Of all the stuff thats been hoarded
And he looked at me kind of weird !

'Now look' says I 'That cane settee
And matching chair you got'
Has it been used in the last two years ?'
'Well, no' says he 'it's not !'
But I got that free for you to sit on
In the garden at your leisure
So on warm summer days you could be idle
And read books just for your pleasure

But last year well it was just too hot
In the evenings.......well not hot enough
So it's been sat in the garage
With all the other heaps of stuff.
There's an old bike without saddle
And old deck chair with a broken leg
Can't remember how long it's been there
'I can fix that one day' Bill said.

Looks like we're gonna need a skip
(Last time was two years ago)
Clear out the garage of all the clutter
Where's it all from ? I do not know !

But half a pig is coming
A fortnight from today
All jointed ready for the oven I must add
And quite a cheap price to pay.
So the freezer is quite important
Else we'll have nothing else to eat
He'll clear the fridge freezer to make room
We'll have no pizzas, or ice cream.....just meat !

And I got my garden done some more
Our Geoff came and did the trick
Cut down the plant that was covering the house
Now we can see the bricks !
He's cleared the herb patch, planted Thyme
And a Rosemary bush I'd got
And when he'd done and I tried to pay him
He said 'No way - pay me you're not !'

He said 'Call it a favour I've done
For all those you've done for me'
Just goes to show that sometimes
The best things in life can be free.

No need to write a poem
'Bout how my day has been
I've put a thread on Coffee Room
For all the world to see

The saga of the freezer
Will it work ? I just don't know
Bills Mum feeling 'out of sorts'
Having a little moan.

My Mum rings.........'where's me cheque book?'
Does she think I might know ?
'Try your handbag - is it there?'
'I've emptied it all out..........No !'

'It must be on the table' I says
'No it aint' says Mum'
I'm that fraught I don't want no tea'
She says sounding more than glum !

Hour later she phones me
'Found me cheque book now
Was on the table all the time'
No wonder I've got a furrowed brow !

The freezer I won't mention
It's all been said before
But I've just found out.....our two boys
Had a row and smashed a door !

I've yet to see the damage
Cant bring myself to see
My old pine door with a panel broke
They both say 'It wasn't me !'

Hey ho........what a merry sunday
Least the Boot Fair was ok
Got two bags..........CD rack for Bill
Plants and shoes........hip hip hooray !!!!

(The men in white coats are coming tomorrow...................lol)
