Well it's Friday night and as wet as can be
And so cold the cat's won't go out
I have to watch one of them - she's getting on
And her toilet habits are in doubt !

It's 'watch were you tread!' in the kitchen
And 'mind that there !' round the armchair
'Ooops' is said, sometimes 'What the heck's that?'
If it's Bill I just know that he'll swear !

We've tried everything with this ancient cat
Litter tray ? No interest shown
But should she venture outside the door
In the plant pots she feels quite at home !

Seems nowhere is safe - outside or indoors
From this thirteen year old tortoishell cat
And I don't want to put folk off calling
By the 'welcome' she leaves on the mat !

We've sprayed stuff around -makes no difference
She sniffs about..............then starts to scratch
If I'm lucky I catch her and shoo her outside
If I'm not...........well.....it's there on the mat !

Oh dear me I do hate the winter, the cold
Our cats ? They just don't seem to care
They do what they have to do outside
Then takeover my favourite armchair !

Except for the tortoishell - Sophie her name
For her..............she favours the table
She knows that she shouldn't and when she's told off
She'll play with the telephone cable.

She'll crawl inside cupboards, drawers if she can
Seems nowhere is sacred to her
If I read the paper - well she reads it too
And I'm sure that she smirks as she purrs !

She's got big amber eyes -quite wicked they are
When I first saw her I should have known
That she would do just what she wanted to do
Which included her 'owning' our home !

My family tree's having a bit of a rest
It's branches and twigs are worn out
Try as I might I can find no more
My dead rellies........they're just not about.

So I'll put into order my Irish clan
It's awkward since they changed their name
In order to keep the land they'd aquired
But I do wish they'd kept it the same.

To change if from Pendered to Saunders
(Which sometimes is Sanders it seems)
Is really confusing cos old Moses Sanders
I'd already got in my tree !

I don't think he was akin to the Irish lot
But how on earth am I to tell ?
Then there were some more Sanders people
Who were builders with houses to sell.

Just before the war ended Mum needed a house
Arthur Sanders........well he was the chap
Who built half the houses in our town
So Mum bought one - quick as a flash !

But was Arthur a rellie of old Moses
Or descendant of the Irish Clan ?
There were so many of them -I haven't a clue
But I'll try and find out if I can.

I'll trudge through the Saunders &Sanders
A link I might find - or might not
But while I'm am sorting this merry lot out
The rest have to come to a stop.

They'll rest on the shelf with the Smiths
And the Haddons and Barnetts and Jones
Alongside the Fishers and Headlands
For the time being that is their home.

I just might discover that Arthur the builder
Who worked so hard all of his life
Might have been Arthur Pendered if his ancestor
Hadn't taken the name of his wife !

Don't feel much like writing poetry
Been a bit of a stressful day
Our lad got sent home from college
'Not very well' - who says ?

He came home all sheepish & very quiet
(We had a bit of row just last night)
Then off he goes with his homeless mate
So far as I can see -he's alright !

I tried to ring our Geoff several times
A fine's due and has to be paid
By tomorrow -else he'll be in trouble
But to get him -what an escapade !

He rang me back sometime later
Only just got out of bed !
(Alright for some, I was thinking
With this pounding going on in my head)

Had a letter 'bout Mum from the council
Now they say she's got money to pay
Council policy's changed since June
I said 'Why?' but no-one could say !

In June I did an assessment
For her caring and financial needs
The council said then 'there will be no charge
Payable from your Mum' -no indeed !

The money they say is back dated
Due from October they said
I said 'What ? And you didn't tell me ??'
I got it this morning instead ??'

The girl at the office said 'I'm so sorry
But I'm not the person you need
Try this number -they maybe can help you'
But the chap had gone for his tea !

So I ranted and raved -(in a fair kind of way)
They said 'tomorrow we'll return your call
If possible that is - we're really so busy
It might not be this week at all !'

I said 'Well it better be - and further more
When I go and visit my Mum
I want an appointment with someone while there
To sort out this mess -get it done'

'Well we might not be able to' they said
I said ' if not then I'll see the MP !'
Then I thought of the other stuff Mum needs doing
That week -And there's just one of me !

Writing Mum's Christmas cards-seeing the council
And and an MP who don't care a fig
I started to sweat -I should engage my brain
Before opening my mouth quite so big !

Oh well - 'tis done now -I've said it and so
If need be I just might fit it in
I feel better now this verse is at an end
Than I did when it first did begin !

Well, todays been a little bit better
Needed it too -I can say
But I still had two phone calls to sort out my Mum
To work out why & what she's to pay !

The council are sending me stuff in the post
That should have sent to me before
So I could have my say, put my point of view
And appeal against my Mum paying more.

But at least the lady I spoke to today
Had some answers........well of some sort
( I still don't know all the what's and the why's)
But least my temper was not quite as short !

I didn't get wound up, letting off steam
Giving myself an aching head
I calmed myself right down, picked up the phone
And spoke to No. 2 son instead.

He's over the moon - so cock-a-hoop
He's got a new job teaching art
No more teaching construction work to students
(With his poor health he found it quite hard)

When he left home to do art and design
To Sussex he went, by the sea
He said 'Mum it's ironic that now I'm teaching
At the same place I got my degree !'

He thought he had messed up his interview
For this dream job he wanted so much
But then said it was strange & all would be ok
Cos he wore his Gramps watch for good luck !

No. 2 son - he's happy with his new girlfriend
Christmas came early he said
The twins -they're delighted their Dad is so happy
'She's brilliant Nan, you'll love her' they said.

Our lad is behaving at college at last
He came home - said he'd had a good day
And tidied his bedroom, made me a cappucino
Said 'Sorry - I know I've been a pain'

So all is well in my corner of the world
Outside ? It's cold and a bit grim
But honestly , just at the moment I don't care
Cos I'm wearing a permanent grin !

Good things always turn up Chris
Just when we think they never will
A new grandchild for you,
And a new boiler for me and Bill !

The men and been and fitted it
They rang at five last night
Said 'we'll be there tomorrow
Hope that will be alright'

I panicked .......so much stuff to shift
In the room where the boiler stands
Far too much for me and Bill
We'd need a helping hand.

The gardening lad said 'I'll come
Be there at eight o'clock'
But he never showed -I overslept
They woke me when they knocked !

The homeless lad we're trying to help
Had stayed with us last night
So him and Bill got stuff shifted
Oh the room was such a sight !

Then the men said 'that room upstairs'
I said 'What ? The back bedroom?
The one I dump my clothes in
And all Dad's stuff ?' - oh gloom !

'We need the floorboards up' they said
'Oh eck' I said 'well hang on'
I started shifting things - Bill said
'Where does all this stuff come from ?'

'Oh shut up Bill' I said 'don't ask'
As we dumped some on our bed
A bit more went in our lad's bedroom
I puffed - my face went red !

The bed was moved, the drawers as well
You just would not have believed
The clutter I'd accumulated
Due for the tip that I'd retrieved.

Bill said It's time this was sorted out
And some of it chucked away
My face dropped.......'do I have to?
'Yes' he said...........I said 'OK'

The old boiler came out easily
And the workmen drilled and filled
Then the new boiler went up on the wall
(By now I was feeling a chill !)

Then just as the workmen finished
The power went-darkness fell
So by candlelight I signed a paper
To say 'They'd done the work very well'.

Our lad and his homeless mate and us
Sat around the kitchen table
And wondered if one of our workmen
Had drilled through a power cable.

We thought of things we couldnt have
Like hot drinks, toast and T.V.
After an hour the lights came on
The kids shouted 'Yippee !'

Bill started dinner - just us two
The boys -they didn't care
They'd had sandwiches by candlelight
To them it was 'fine faye'.

Now things are back to normal
The boys are watching T.V.
And the cat has christened the boiler
With a poo underneath it - for me !

The electrician came today
To fit the thermostat
For our new boiler - just a few wires
I thought -that would be that !

'Oh no' says he, scratching his head
'Take more than half a day
To do the wiring, drill through walls
At least a day, I'll say'

I felt so low - I thought by now
That it would all be done
Why do these things happen to me ?
Am I the only one ?

The our lad got his football
Kicked it round the kitchen floor
I shouted - 'This aint a football pitch'
But he just kicked it more.

So now I've chucked him outside
With his mates - they'll be back for tea
Cos I'm not in the mood today
For messing about............not me !

But Jason in the garden
He is my saving grace
I sat with him and had a moan
He put a smile upon my face.

He's gravelled over loads of plants
That I wanted left to see
And there's heaps of twigs and rubbish
Where my rockery should be !

The wheelie bin is overflowing
No room for leaves and weeds
So though its not quite what I wanted
Complain to him ? Not me !

He's got such a sense of humour
Makes me laugh when things go wrong
And I can always replant what's been moved
Back where it first came from

Oh Mary.....you need a break girl
From all you have to do
Have a well earned holiday
Just for Bill and YOU

Take a weekend break
Go somewhere quite different
Perhaps you may go both to Spain
Just to see you your Brother

Just trying to cheer you up mate
My ideas not maybe sound
you can always come to Isle of Man
So many delights to be found

Have a thought now for yourself
cos you are the one who matters
where would they all be without you

Your time mate...............least for week or so

Not much of a poem but hey I aint Rabbie Burns..........lol

Bless you Mollie, the Isle of Man
Will welcome us one day
Next year maybe ? Who can tell
But we'll get there one fine day.

And honestly, it aint that bad
But straightforward things are not
Electrics, gas...........you name it
But ............oh, it aint half hot !!

It's like summer all over again
But without the sun and glare
No sunglasses or suncream needed
No skin cancer scare.

Just basking in the heat we've got
No need for cardi's now
It's t-shirts and a large hankie
To mop by beaded brow !

Jason can do my garden
Just any way he'd like to choose
It saves me getting 'Ground Force' in
Cos who knows what they'd do !

I've more important stuff to do
For Mum - (like I need more !)
The council sent me Consultation Papers
That I've not seen before.

I should have had them in August
To put my point of view
Well it's not too late, not for me
I'll really make 'em stew !

These papers are confusing
Understand them ? No not me
But they've said if I need help to ring
The office - ask for Doreen

So Monday that is what I'll do
And say 'Translation please'
'Men in suits' must have wrote this
I don't know what it means.

And in a weeks time I'll be off
To see my Mum again
And need to get some presents wrapped
That are cluttering up my den !

Cards are sorted, stamps stuck on
My word.....I'm organised
Book of my poems for my Mum
Done all my 'Christmas buys'

Calendars are ordered
One for Bill -one for my son
Magazine subscriptions ordered
For our respective Mums.

The rest's ready for wrapping
But I've got a job to do
Sorting out the mounds of stuff
In a heap in our spare room !
