Oh eck my head it's aching
I'm going round and round
I just want my Grans cottage
But it seems it cant be found.

It's there I know -But what's it called?
I've checked the census out
In 1881 and '91
1901 just made me shout ! .

I tried to do an address search
'No result' was the reply
I tried the bloke who used to live there
'No result' -did he die ?

I've e mailed Bedford library
They said 'Try the Archives'
I did they said 'Try the library'
I said 'I have ' -they said 'History Site?'

I said 'I would if there was one'
But sadly seems just me
Is interested in this little village
All for my family tree.

I e mailed the Family History Site
No reply from weeks ago
So now I think I'll phone them
Or shall I ?.............I dont know !

Everytime I read something
'Bout Bedfordshire's times gone by
I e mail the webmaster
'Can't help you' is the reply.

I've looked for maps of all sorts
Hoped they would give a clue
But all I see is a black spot for
Gran's cottage - that's the view !

I won;t give up - Pear Tree Cottage
(Or whatever it was called)
In 1901 - I'll get it
I'll buy the census - all !

It's my birthday today
A year older ? Not me !
I'm turning time round
Getting younger you see.

I thought the time had come
To turn back the clock
So I'll never be old
Despite cardi's & bedsocks!

I may go for purple
In a really big way
Wear big hats have big bags
Take in cats that are stray

My hair will lose colour
Well it's done that already
I've got a few wrinkles
But hey - not that many !

Bits of me that went out
Now they go in
And bits that went in
Go out - is that a sin ?

I may say a few things
I've said twice before
And forget when I leave the room
What I left for

My mind it may drift
In the post office queue
And I leave behind my pink card
(Well - that's nothing new!)

I may ache when I bend down
Or go upstairs
And need the loo more times
Than once while I'm there

But I've got a wee motto
That for me fits the bill
Says 'Dance like there's nobody watching'
I will !!!!!!!!

My birthday went fine -sort of
Our Mindi came for tea
With boyfriend Paul -when they went home
We sat to watch T.V.
11 o'clock our lad came home
With two others in tow
'Can they stay here?' our lad asked
I said a firm loud 'NO!'
'But one's been locked out by his mum'
I said 'I'll put that right'
And phoned her -said 'please let him in
He can't stay here all night'
'OK' said his Mum, send him home
The other chap looked sad
'He's homeless and his tents burnt down
Please let him stay' begged our lad.
'Well just for one night' I said
'Then off he has to go
To sort this with the council
And try and find a home'

We went to bed - this morning
The phone rang - a voice said
'We're coming to finish your drain repair.
Did you not get a call from Fred ?
'Oh well we're on our way now
Be there 'bout half past nine'
I got Bill out of bed quick
(Last night he'd too much wine!)
They drilled and filled and drilled some more
Then a social worker came
About a new boy we might have
Then the men they drilled again !
I think I heard what she told me
Anyway, I said ' he can't come yet
Cos the bedroom isn't finished
Polyfilla's got to set
Then the walls need unibonding
(Well that's what Bill had said)
Before wallpaper can go up
And paint - and I need a bed.
The other one is broken now
He can't sleep on the floor
And bedding needs to be got
And a new lock on the door.
'So next Monday ? Is that alright?'
She said - I said 'OK'
Then realised I'd got just one week
(Shan't get much done today!)
Becky ,who once lived here
Had said she could wallpaper
She was due to come tomorrow
But I've asked her to come later.
'Wednesday I'll be there' she said
'OK thanks' says I
'I'll get it sorted, don't worry' she said
'See you then..................bye!'
So thats my Monday so far
And it's only one o'clock
Lunchtime and thank goodness
The drilling now has stopped !

Me and Bill we both got up
With raging aching heads
I was cold and shivering
He broke out in a sweat.

The workmen came and drilled some more
That added to my gloom
Bill got some 'sticky paint'
To fill the cracks in the bedroom.

It smelt, he flung open the window
Draught blew down the stairs
I went and put my cardi on
(Bright red with bright blue squares)

I shivered more, the workmen drilled
My head was fit to burst
And then I started sneezing
Just to make matters worse !

I blew my nose -it shone bright red
Bill rolled up his shirt sleeves
'I'm hot' he said -I said 'I'm not !
Put the heating on ..............please ???'

He sat and read the paper
I shivered ......made a fuss
'Bout being cold - he muttered
Something about the dust !

'I would have hoovered' I said
'And would have got the duster out
But I don't feel well -I'm frozen !'
He said 'No need to shout'

He said 'What I meant was that
Some dust got up my nose
Expect that's why you're sneezing'
I said 'That ain't why I'm froze !!!'

I wrapped my cardi round me
Like real old biddies do
He said 'Alright I'll put the heating on
Just to please you'.

'Thankyou' said I 'About time too'
The workmen knocked the door
'We're nearly done now missus'
They said........we're off at four !'

'Be back tomorrow -no more drilling
That should ease your head
We're laying loads of tarmac
No noise.......you can stay in bed !'

'Fat chance' says I 'Tomorrow
Is wallpapering day
Becky's coming to help out
Me stay in bed ? No way !'

'How many kids have you got here
Says the man holding the drill
'They seem to come and go all day'
'Too many ' says Bill..

'Won;t do something when you ask
Unless they're getting paid
Out they go - back lunctime
Then the fridge they raid.'

The young lad working for them
Smiled - said 'that's my Dad'
'You want him ?' says his father
'Cos he's not a bad lad'

Got girlfriends by the dozen
Drinks too much - swears a lot
'We'll do a swap' says Bill
His Dad smiled, said 'No.........maybe not'

The workmen turned up early
Laid tarmac in the road
Then said 'we're all done now luv,
So we're off.........cheerio !'

Becky came to wallpaper
We both surveyed the walls
The plaster paint Bill put on
Meant no need to paper at all !

So Becky and I went out to lunch
At the local Patisserie
Caught up on some gossip
Then did 'retail therapy'.

I bought a t-shirt, she wanted socks
With teddy bear's on the top
(She's twenty - going on thirteen!)
But she said 'they're fun - why not ?'

My head it is still throbbing
But at least I've not been sneezing
And now we've got the heating on
I'm warm as toast -not freezing!

Yesterday I got some ink
My printer now and me
Cannot be parted from each other
Till I'm done -when will that be?

I've printed off some photos
And archive stuff I found
(Thought I'd found grandma's cottage
But 'twas the wrong bit of ground)

I found stuff 'bout the Pendereds
But nothing I didn't know
Apart from one bloke who it seemed
Sold off a farm he owned.

I now need a new folder
To put all this stuff in
Cos most of it's history
And places where I've lived.

So off I went this morning
To the boot fair -purse in tow
Thinking I'd get some folders cheap
But did I ? - sadly no !

Instead I bought some pansies
And a large enamel sign
That's going in my kitchen
So it's seen all the time.

It says 'This is Mom's B & B
Open 24 hours a day
Cook,seamstress,phsychologist
On duty............for no pay.

But contributions given to me
Will be appreciated '
Our lad looked, laughed - went out
Left me the mess he'd created !!

The sun came out, the sky was blue
With a freshness in the air
(Well if I'm honest, bloomin' cold)
But I did not despair.
The pansies I bought yesterday
And the half a dozen pinks
Needed a home, I scratched my head
And had a little think.
Nasturtiums -they're in flower again
Geraniums -they're still going
And what;s more our Morning Glory
Thinks it's Spring again & growing !
It died off quite a while ago
Just as it's supposed to do
So now I'm stuck with these plants
And there's not a lot of room !
But ruthlessly I pulled up
What I think was a thistle
At first I thought it was a flower
Till I touched its leaves - ugh ! Bristle !
So out if came......left a big hole
And my Pinks were quickly in
The purple pansies found a home
In small pots & an enamel bin
Then Bill said to me ......'Look here
You want a pot...........here's lots !'
I don't know why you're messing
Looking for little fiddly pots!'
He'd dug up his tomatoes
The peppers and the chillies
But I said '6 pansies and 6 pinks in them
Would look ...........well a bit silly !
They're big tubs.........can you really see
Six pansies sitting there ?
Cos I can't ........fill 'em up with bulbs'
I said..........and grabbed a chair !
I'd bent down so much doing this
And young...........well I am not
My legs wobbled like jelly
And my back was all in knots.
So I sat down and phoned my Mum
'You're getting old' she said
'You can't do what you used to,
Don;t be daft.........now use your head.
Get someone else to do it all
You ought to have a rest
At your age?' I said 'Thanks Mum
You've made me feel past my best!'
Then I thought .poor soul - in her wheelchair
There's nothing she can do
Then I heard her bellow down the phone
'It's on - Terry Wogan - Points of View !
'Ring me in the morning - Oh don't
Bingo starts at Ten
And - don't phone in the afternoon
I've got visitors then.
Tuesday ? Crystal Healing
And Ron - he might pop by
Then we're making christmas cards
'Mum you are busy' says I.
'Wednesday - having my nails done
Then out somewhere for tea
Thursday ? Armchair areaobics'
Look I'll call you - don't call me !'
