    Default Wiltshire Trowbridge 1821 census

I have a transcript of Trowbridge 1821 census and am willing to do look ups. The information given is very limited - usually only an address, name of head of household and number of other males & females living there.

Please be prepared to wait up to two weeks - the records are on fiche so I have to go to the library to read them.

    Hello Gillian,

If this offer is still available, I am interested in the family of GULEY who were living in Trowbridge around this time.

Just out of interest, if I were to buy records on fiche from a family history society - do they let you bring your own fiche to view in the libraries? I have often wondered what people use to view the published fiches.

I am not in any rush for the GULEY info - at your convenience.

    Regards

    Hazel

    Hi Hazel

Sadly there aren't any Guleys listed on the 1821 census in Trowbridge.

I found one in the apprentice records - I don't know whether he fits into your tree.

Guly als (alias) Bush, Edward, age 9 apprenticed June 28 1777 Trowbridge to Sartin, James - broadweaver

And a record among the St James Trowbridge pew rents -

Pew No 3 - 1811 April 11, READ Jno, GULY Wm, dead, May 14 1814 pd for (I'll leave you to try to interpret that!

There's no problem at all about using library fiche readers for your own fiche

    Hello Gillian,

I cannot place those names at present but will keep them as I have just begun searching in Trowbridge for the GULEY name.

A couple of Royal Marine records from national archives confirmed John Guley and brother James were born in Trowbridge - they were baptised in London. The parents were Anthoney Guley and Elizabeth White married at St James, Trowbridge 1798.

Thank you for the details and the tip about the fiche.

    Hi Gillian,

I'm researching a woollen weaver named Levi Francis who I believe was born around 1821. The early censuses in Scotland where he was living merely say place of birth "England". Later English censuses give "Yorkshire" or "Trowbridge", quite a difference! I can find no trace of his birth on IGI.

Could you please see if he appears aged under 3 or whether there were any Francis families there, possibly in the wool trade. There were certainly some in 1841.

Hi Ray - there are Francis/Frances families about in 1821 but the info is too limited to be of much help.

    Jas Francis 2m Castle St

Richd Francis 2m 5f Hill St

    James Francis 1m 2f Islington

    J Frances 3m 5f Hilperton Lane & Yerbury St

    Thos Frances 2m 5f Studley Green & W Row

I'll have a look at apprentice records next week to see if I can tie down any of the families as weavers

    Hi Gillian.

I've just come across some other info.

Parents were William, a Baptist Minister & Joanna, so no connection to weaving at that time. Other children around then were William & possibly Jane. Levi would be about 1.

    No hurry whatsoever.

    cheers

    Ray
