Hi Rainbow I am looking for my Grans family they lived in Tonbridge Wells I believe the road they were in was Station Road the names are George Henry Adams and Caroline Hubble, Georges Parents were George Henry Adams and Eliza Jane Demeza they were both I believe from Penshurst Kent But I think Caroline's were from the Tunbridge area.

George was born 1878 and Caroline 1880 Caroline's parents were Louisa Richardson and her father was John Hubble, both c 1855

    Any help would be great.

    Dear Suey

I had a quick visit today to the Tunbridge Wells library and together with a lot more census information I have on the area, have found for you the following information.

Caroline was as you rightly say one of the daughters of John and Louisa Jane Hubble. She was baptised in early 1881, in the Trinity parish, close to where the family lived at 23 Goods Station Road. Caroline had siblings called Rebecca, Rhoda, Charles, Herbert and Alice. Caroline’s parents married in 1878 in Tunbridge Wells, her father John was born in Tunbridge Wells and he came from a long line of chimney sweeps. He was born in 1855, and his father John born in 1832 in Wrotham, Kent and he also was a sweep. Caroline’s mother Louisa Jane Richardson came from Dover and was also born in 1855.

John Hubble and his family lived in Goods Station Road and roads off it for most of their lives and can be traced from the 1861 – 1901 censuses there.

John Hubble (1832) and his wife Mary Ann and his wife had 3 sons – John, Stephen and James. James was a chimney sweep as well, working in the family firm with his brother and father. In this era the sweeps would have travelled by horse and cart and old maps show stabling in the surrounding area.

In early 1900, Caroline married George Henry Adams, also in Tunbridge Wells. He was a son of George Henry Adams and Jane (Eliza) Demeza (Demesa). His father was born in 1851 in Hanworth, Middlesex and his mother was a local girl from Penshurst. They married in 1871 in the Sevenoaks area. They also had children called Agnes, Amos, John, Maria and Nellie. They lived at No3, Second St, Speldhurst. And George Adams (1851) was a bricklayer.

Jane Eliza Demesa was born in 1853, a daughter of John Demesa and Jane Ann Coombs. Both her parents were born and bred in Penshurst. Jane had the following siblings – Annie, Edward, Florence, Georgina, John, Mary Ann and Sarah. In the 1861 census the family lived in Fordcombe Cottages, Penshurst and in 1871 had moved to Chafford Cottages in Penshurst. Her parents married in 1850 in Sevenoaks. John Demesa was born in 1833 in Penshurst to George Demesa and Sarah Holding. They married in Penshurst in 1831. George Demesa died in 1837 in Penshurst. Sarah was also born in Penshurst in 1810. The other siblings to John were William and Mary Ann. In the 1881 census John Demesa was a milkman and one of his sons was too.

Sevenoaks was the registration district for Penshurst, Chiddingstone, and Fordcombe.

I hope this information makes interesting reading, regards Rainbow

Hi there, What a great find! most of my family are from T/Wells! I have lived there and went to school at St Augustines!! I do have quite alot of research of the family, but there are 'little' things that you can't find out online! and now being in NZ a bit far to come! Does the library have cemetery records? I also believe that the old one at Woodbury Pk is being transformed? I did email a person concerning it but haven't had a reply. I believe some of my family could be buried there. My family names are Smitherman first Tudley then to T/Wells and my grandparents lived in Silverdale Rd. Neal, a Job came from Salehurst via Frant to T/Wells after the 1851 census as my Ggrandfather Joseph was born in 1856 in T/Wells, and Greeners these are the big mystery! they were in Pembury, and it looks like they were the only Greeners around! Does the library have the Pembury workhouse records? as a Henry Greener was there in the 1901 census, his wife and children elsewhere?? and his mother and siblings in the village, as for the father George Greener!!! can't find a birth [he states he was born in Pembury on his army papers not sure of the year but roughly 1841/44? also can't find his death! he and his family went to Pembury after he was discharged from the RHA in Ireland in dec 1881, the rest of the family are in the village in the 1891 but not him! There is a story passed down from his daughter [my Ggrandmother] that he went off with a 'lady' from the workhouse, where he was working! since twins were born in 1882, anytime after that! so any Greeners in Pembury, [I have checked the parish records for Pembury and no sign of any Greeners before 1881!] Although I was told that they could of been and the is it lower end? then they wouldn't of been under the parish church. I would really love to try and solve the BIG brickwall of George Greener, [I suspect he may of been born under his mothers name!] There was some big problem as I made contact with a grandson of Henry Greener and he said there was a family 'feud' of some sort as his father would never speak of his parents and he himself knew nother of the Greener family at all!

So if it isn't too much for you to do, if you could look up any Pembury records after 1881 to find the baps of Charles and Florence the twins in 1882 deaths of Henry 1907, Mary 1906 [she was George's wife] Other children were George Albert, Arthur, Alice [married a Fred Sells], Mary Ann [married a Fred Green] Charles of course and Florence who married a George Valentine and by all accounts stayed in Pembury. I have found deaths for George Albert 1957, Arthur 1965 and Charles 1946, on the civil reg but they just put 'Tonbridge' dist. None of these 3 had children and I'm interested in their deaths as on the 1901 Mary, Albert and Arthur had what looks like a number 1 in the end box, which states 1 is for deaf?

I hope you can understand all this!! it's hard to condense this family!! anything that you are able to do is really very much appreciated! Just one last thing!! in the 1891 census Mary puts herself as married and in the 1901 as a widow! also in 1901 the ecclesiastical parish was put as St James!

    Thanks a bunch!

    Regards

    Dawn

    Hi Rainbow,

I have a baptism date at Tunbridge Wells, which is 28/09/1799. I would like to confrim whether the surname is Harrington or Hannington. Her name is Mary Ann and her parents are William Harrington/Hannington and Judith Lillywhite.

    Thanks for your time

Just so I can narrow down the parish records to look through, do you know what ecclesiastical area of T.Wells the baptism took place in?
