Hi Gillian. If possible could you please check out a James TURNER. age 21, from London to South Africa. Possibly 1896. I think destination would be Cape Town. He was my great-uncle. Was a pugilist & was in Kimberley Guard of that Town during the 1899 seige. If you run out of credits before my request don't worry. Many thanks.
Kind regards Jimbo.
Hi Jimbo

Hi Gillian. Thank you very much for looking that up for me. You are right, he was an interesting chap, I haven't found out a lot about him yet. Being a fireman was unknown to me, I know he worked for the Portsmouth Gas Co. as a meter fitter. He was also a boxer in England. The family mythe was that he chased a chap called "Pedlar Palmer" all over the north of England for a fight.
In South Africa he boxed in all the states even Bullawayo. He bacame S.A lightweight Champ after beating a "Jim Holloway". That is according to a book called "The Fighters" by Chris Gravestein. Through my search for him I now find I have several cousins in Johannesburgh. One of them was a Lt. Colonal in the S.A army. I could only rise to corporal in the RAF.
Much obliged .... Jimbo.
Gillian thank you so much again i have just googled the ship 'Royal Edward' it seems it reported the icebergs just before the sailing of the illfated Titanic.
It was great seeing a picture of the ship. It was torpodoed in the ww1 as a british troop shipin 1915.
thanks again
Cher
