Does these cover the neighbouring village of West Burton?
I am trying to trace the lineage of THOMAS SMITH (b 1776 in North Yorkshire) and ELIZABETH LAMBERT (b 1775 in North Yorkshire) who married in 1793 in West Burton. Their son ROBERT was also born there in 1799. I know plenty of LAMBERTs were still in West Burton in the 1841 census. I would appreciate any help you can give! |

Sorry I cannot find a Thomas Smith nor an Elizabeth Lambert born around the dates you give. Strangely though I found a marriage between a Thomas Smith and Elizabeth Lambert on 29th September 1783 in the Aysgarth Parish Records. They were married by Banns and the curate was James Law. Witnesses: Jane Lambert, Richard J Cannon, and James Thwaite. Several children born in Newbiggin and Burton are there one of them being a Robert baptised 31 May 1794. Elizabeth died 1839 and was buried 17 November age 78. Where did you find the details of Robert's birth and their marriage?
I also found a birth of an Elizabeth Lambert baptised 5 April 1761 Newbiggin daughter of Thomas Lambert. Let me know what you think please. happy hunting Maggie ![]() ![]() |

Thank you so much for your VERY prompt help.
You have the right people. I had the wrong dates. I have just re-checked my sources. Robert's records show a considerable variance in birth dates. The 1841 census (Alne) shows an estimated birth date of 1796; the transcriber of the 1851 census misread the handwritten age by 20 years; and his marriage records show what I suspect to be an inflated age. The Parish Records at Tholthorpe, nr Alne, record a marriage between Robert Smith (21) and Ann Humphrey (19) on 7 Sept 1812, with their first child arriving only 5 months later. It looks as if both bride and groom inflated their ages. Other later census records suggest that they were only 17. LDS International Genealogical Index (unsourced) records the 1812 marriage and suggest that Robert's parents were Thomas Smith and Elizabeth Smith nee Lambert. And I can't lay my hands on the source for the date of Thomas Smith and Elizabeth Lambert's marriage but I think it was also a LDS record. It looks as if it might have been a misreading of the date as 1793 instead of 1783. It looks as if Thomas and Elizabeth were older than I expected. I guess you didn't find a Thomas Smith born circa 1761? Thanks very much for your help Deb |

A few more snippets of information:
Thomas Smith b1761 was still alive in June 1841- recorded as living alone on a farm in West Burton. I can't find his death- although another Thomas Smith's death is recorded in Askrigg in the Jan-Mar England & Wales Free BMD indices. He was age 80 in 1841, and I cannot trace him in the 1851 census. Presumeably he died between those dates? Ref his marriage 29 Sept 1783- I assume the records do not record Thomas' father, his profession or the residences of Thomas Smith and Elizabeth Lambert? I am wondering if there is any connection to the Smiths of Camshouse Farm, Askrigg. Alexander Smith of Bowbridge Hall and Camshouse, and a Thomas Lambert got into a dispute over a third share of the Coleby Manor whihc they had bought from the Colebys in the 1680s. |

Sorry still have not found the birth of Thomas Smith. Nor can I find his burial on Aysgarth/Askrigg PR. I did find him on the 1841 census and did you notice that there are also Lamberts living in the same area?
Have you tried the Dales FHS group website, you have to register but it is free and there are some very clever people on there who might be able to answer your question about the claim between the Smiths and Lamberts. Worth a try? Let me know if I can help in any other way. best wishes Maggie ![]() |
