Hi Nanna,

Are you still able to do lookups on Liverpool street directories? I am looking for information about my grandfather who was born John Victor S Bullock in 1887 in Liverpool, son of Joseph Simon Bullock and his third wife Sarah Jane Vaughan.

On the 1891 census he is listed as John S V Bullock age 3 living with his parents at Cambridge Hotel, Cambridge Street (28 Picton Road).

By 1901 he is listed as Victor Bullock age 13 living at 28 Picton Road with his mother Sarah J and his stepfather John A Summer (possibly Sumner).

In 1913 he married my grandmother in Peterhead Scotland but his name on the marriage entry is Percy John Sidney Victor Bullock Rowlands!!! and his father is listed as Joseph Simon Bullock Rowlands so it looks as if he changed his name sometime between 1901 and 1913.

Can you find him in the 1911 street directory under any of his many names? Is he or his mother still at Picton Road?

His father is listed as a Licenced Victualler in the 1881 census living at 28 Wavertree Road. 28 Picton Road seems to have been a public house. Did Wavertree Road change it's name or are these different addresses?

I would be grateful for any info you could provide.

Thanks,
Anne

Hi Daisy,
I am sorry but the directory only gives the name of the main householder, sometime's with/sometime's without their occupation.
The following may be able to help with when the houses were built and who the first occupant's were.

Hi Anne,

1911 Street Directory
There is no John Victor S Bullock listed
Joseph(M) Bullock - 138, Wavertree Vale, Wavertree,L/Pool.
Joseph Bullock - 20 Clarendon Road,Anfield,L/pool.
Sarah (No J) Bullock - 44 Shallcross Street,Everton,L/pool.

There are no Sarah Jane Bullock Rowlands listed
" " " John Victor S Bullock Rowlands listed
" " " Joseph Simon Bullock Rowlands listed.

28 Cambridge Street - Frank Ashcroft - Victualler
28 Wavertree Road - Robert Smith Cundle - Cycle Manufacturer.

Both these street's run into one another and are one of the main routes into the town centre, and are at the end of the street where I live, and I used to visit 'The Cambridge' quite often when I was younger.

Hi Nanna,

Thanks very much for the information. My grandfather may have left Liverpool by 1911. He would have been about 23 by then. I guess I'll just have to wait for the 1911 census to see if I can find him.

It's quite a co-incidence that you live close to Cambridge Street. I've only visited Liverpool twice and at that time I didn't know that my grandfather had been born there. I really must make another visit.

The 1891 census shows the pub address as Cambridge Street and 28 Picton Road. Was it on the corner of these streets?

Do you think you could do another search in the 1911 directory for John (A) Summer or Sumner (my grandfather's stepfather)? He is also shown in the 1901 census as a licenced victualler. It would be interesting to know if he was still in Liverpool at that date.

Thanks again,
Anne

Hi Anne,
Have searched the 1911 Street Directory and unfortunately there is no John (A) Summer/Sumner listed, sorry.

Ref the Cambridge Public House, yes it is on the corner of Picton Road and Cambridge Street.
Also two of my first cousin's where born in Cambridge Street.

Hi Nanna,

Thanks for your time again. I'm not sure what to try next. My grandfather is proving difficult to track!

Thanks anyway,

Hi Nanna, I dont know if you're still willing to do lookups?
If you are and have time, I would be grateful to know if

Thomas Wharton was living in Skelhorne St Liverpool in 1843 Directory?
He was a Shoemaker age then abt 54. His wife was Mary and his son was Ellis.
I cant find him on the 1851 census at that address. I know Ellis was married from that address in 1845 but I cant seem to find them anyplace before this date. I do know Ellis was born in Malpas Cheshire. Thomas, Tilston Cheshire. Mary in Liverpool

Sorry this is a tall order Calx
