Hope this is of some help Tony:

William Kearton baptised 7th April 1793 Nappa Scar North Yorkshire son of William Kearton.

William Kearton (senior) married Mary Birbeck (Askrigg) 22nd October 1792 Askrigg North Yorkshire

Witnesses: Thomas Fowler and William Birkbeck

    Curate: James Lamb.

There is no indication that the bride and groom were unable to sign the register themselves.

    regards

    Maggie

many thanks for your incredibly prompt reply .... it was very helpful

from what I can tell from the OS map, the info. that William was from Nappa Scar seems to limit his place of birth to a handful of houses which I will be able to visit on a planned holiday to The Dales next summer

    best wishes

    sorry ... me again

it may well be that Mary Birkbeck's mother was Mary Turner who may well have been born in Askrigg in 1745

(rather weirdly, her father may have been Thomas Metcalf ??)

can you confirm and/or help in any way

    thanks!

    Hi Tony

First of all why do y
ou think Thomas Metcalf is Mary Birbeck's father?

This is what I have found so far see what you think:

Mary Birbeck baptised 17th July 1770 father Thomas Birbeck Muker

William Birbeck ? Mary's brother baptised 18th Februrary 1768 Grinton in Swaledale Gunnerside.

Mary Turner married Thomas Birbeck 27th July 1766 Grinton

Thomas Birbeck born around 1741 burial 16th February 1793

William Birbeck (junior) married Eleanor Fowler 10th Sept 1792

Witnesses: Thomas Fowler and W Sagar

    Curate: James Lambe Askrigg

Apart from William's marriage this data has been obtained from www.familysearch.org

If I find anything else I will let you know and of course if you need further look-ups you let me know.

    Happy hunting

    regards

    Maggie

again, many thanks or your splendid efforts on my behalf

owing to sloppy phrasing, there was a dreadful ambiguity in my previous message ... it meant to say that Thomas Metcalfe appears to be the father of Mary Turner (not of her daughter Mary Birkbeck) ... I'm pretty sure I got that (apparently erroneous) info. from www.familysearch.org but I can't check back at present as the site seems to be "down" ... that was also the source of Mary Turner being born in Askrigg in 1745, but I assume from your message the original records can't confirm this

    cheers

    tony

PS apart from William (thanks for the info. on his marriage), Mary Birkbeck seems to have had at least four other siblings, Betty (1779), Henry (1782), Tomme (1775) and Dinah (1776)

PPS the Birkbeck's seem to have been a long standing Grinton family ... with moderate confidence, I think I can say that Mary Birkbeck's great grandfather was George Birkbeck (b. 1627)

PPPS I'm fairly new to all this ... isn't it addictive !

    Hi

It was probably me who misread your message, blame it on the senior moments I have.

I seem to have come to a halt with your ancestors- for the moment anyway.

I can't find Mary Turner on the Askrigg records, but on her marriage details it did say she was born around 1745 in Grinton but alas no father was given.

Re George Birbeck my records only go back to 1675 for baptisms so I can't find his birth I am afraid. Also there does not seem to be many baptisms from the Grinton area.

You are right this hobby is highly addictive and should perhaps carry a health warning.

Let me know where you saw the birth of Mary T with father as Thomas Metcalfe please. I have looked on family search but was unable to find it.

Sorry I could not be more helpful.

    Happy hunting

    Maggie

    hi again

many thanks for a second time making so much effort on my behalf even if the outcome was disappointing ... that said, it is partially the fragmentary and elusive nature of so much of the evidence that makes this such a terrific enterprise

Mary Turner's entry in www.familysearch.com is copied below :

Mary TURNER (AFN: 10CM-VWT) PedigreeSex: FFamily Event(s):Birth: 1745<Askrigg, Yorkshire, England>Death: 13 Feb 1831Askrigg, Yorkshire, EnglandParents:Father: Thomas METCALF (AFN: 10CM-VTF) Family Mother: Marriage(s):Spouse: Thomas BIRKBECK (AFN: 10CM-VND) Family Marriage: 27 Jul 1766

it is difficult to interpet unless the marriage to Thomas Birkbeck was her second and that doesn't seem very likely for a 21 year old

    cheers

    tony
