    Default SoG Library look-ups

I go occasionally to the Society of Genealogists Library in London - they have copies of a number of parish registers (but not all) from around the country. I spend some time on my own research but am willing to do look-ups for members (pre 1837 unless later record really can't be found). Please post on this thread with as much detail as possible.

This could help with a 'brick wall' but is quite time consuming so please first check the online library catalogue to make sure they have the relevant records - and also try all other possible resources first (including the IGI and AA help boards). I cannot undertake lengthy research - only fairly specific look-ups.

The date of my next visit is -

    Thursday 4 September

    Hi Gillian,

I would be very grateful for a look-up for Esther/Hester Garratt born Newport Pagnell, Bucks. on 28/2/1834 to find out who her mother was, as in the 1841 she was with Elizabeth and in 1851 with Martha. The IGI shows Martha as her mother, but Thomas, according to the IGI married Elizabeth Petts in Feb., 1820. However, there is no birth entry for Elizabeth on the IGI, but for Martha born 1801, there is an entry. All of her siblings' IGI birth entries show the name Elizabeth as their mother.

    Thanks very much,

    Sudjhr

    Hi Gillian,

I see in their catalogue that someone (M.J. McNaught) has transcribed the parish registers for Cornworthy, Devon and given a copy to the SoG.

My Perrott/Parrett ancestors came from Cornworthy, and I have a family tree compiled by a cousin (now deceased) which goes back to the start of parish registers there in 1563. Whenever possible, though, I like to confirm the information I've received from others. I've been able to check the microfiche for 1653 to 1699; however, the earlier registers (as well as some later ones) are only available on microfilm (not fiche), and I haven't been able to find a copy in Canada.

I realize that a transcription is a secondary source and may contain errors; however, I'd probably make a few errors of my own trying to read the original registers, and this transcription will certainly be easier to work with. I'm wondering if you could take a quick look at this document and give me an idea of how long it is (i.e., no. of pages), specifically for the period from 1563 to 1642, and from 1700 to 1754.

The catalogue information is as follows:

    Author: McNaught, M J (trans.)

    Title: Cornworthy: C 1563-1850; M 1568-1642, 1653-1850; B 1563-1641, 1653-1850

    Published: 2005

Description: Parts paginated separately, indexes (maroon cloth, 12")

    Call Number: DE/R 93

    Location: Devon shelves

    Item ID:120601

    Collection Type: Reference only

If the number of pages is not excessive, would you consider making photocopies for me, presumably on a subsequent visit? Of course, I'd expect to pay for these and the cost of postage if you could give me an idea of the cost. Alternatively, if you have a digital camera and the SoG allows it, perhaps you could simply send me image files via e-mail (again assuming that there aren't too many pages).

I can assure you that my only interest is my own research, and I have no intention of publishing or otherwise distributing this information.

Feel free to send me a PM or e-mail if you have any questions.

    Thanks -

    Tim

Hi Tim - I'll have a look to see what is there - I'm not sure that photocopying several pages of a book will be allowed though. Some of the registers are also available on fiche. What are you looking for exactly - just any reference to Perrott/Parrotts?

Hi sudjhr - I checked the entry for Esther Garratt and it was as on the IGI - mother Martha. A complete mystery!

    Hi Gillian,

Thank you very much for that look-up. May I request another look-up when you go to the SoG again for her mother who was born in about 1801? Possibly her mother's full name was Martha Elizabeth? That could explain why she was Elizabeth on Esther's siblings' IGI birth entries.

    Best regards,

    sudjhr

    Hi Gillian,

Thankyou so so much for your offer of help.

My great grandfather is Thomas Henry Hilliard, born 1888 poplar - lighterman. His father was Thomas also, and mother, Hannah.

I know there were other waterman/lighterman in the family, but will be over the moon with any info i can get on my great grandfather alone. Not sure how young they started apprenticeships back then, but i know he was definitely at school during the 1901 census.

Is there any other info you need?

    very grateful....

    Kat
