Hiya, I've had a look on the internet & although I can't find an exact meaning, I have found that a spade tree is an instrument that helps transplant bushes or trees in the landscape gardening business.
www.treetoad.com/models.asp Also, possibly a Spade Handle Maker! Last edited by Waks; 10-02-2007 at 06:10 PM. Reason: extra info |

Hi Seeker,
Having trawled around the internet I found references in Trade directories to Spade tree works at saw mills and wood turneries as well as refernces to moderen Spade treeswhich, apparently, have 3 or 4 hydraulic blades that extract a cone of soil and roots. I found some pubs in Leicestershire - The Spade Tree Inn @ Newton Burgiland, The Spade Tree Restaurant @ Coalville & The SpadeTree @ Hinckley - may have pictures? I finally found the same query at a RootsWeb forum (http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read...-03/0922243707) and a reply - "A spade tree was (is) a narrow (6 to 8 inches,) straight blade, spade used for transplanting trees. It had a heavy central rib which created a suitable hole to place the small tree in. Secondly, it allowed one to dig a small hole which was the size needed." I don't know if this is any moe help but, best of luck. Al |
