Post Printers - London

A number of my relatives have had connections with the printing trade.
My grandmothers family were printers in London from 1790 - 1910 & her Mother was daughter of John Southward who wrote numerous books on printing.

Found a interesting site on book trade & printers in the 18th Century:
http://www.devon.gov.uk/localstudies/100154/1.html#8

"Exeter working papers in British book trade history" It covers London & the some information on the rest of the UK as well as Devon.

Must find time to research more on 19thC printing.

Hi David

My great, great grandfather and his father both called William Thomas Coombs were lithographic printers in London. William Jnr was a compositor for one of the press offices in Farringdon Road but he lived in the Oxford Street area. This explains how he met my great, great gran as she lived in Holborn near Farringdon Road before they wed.

He was a member of a London Printers Union as well.

Cool Re: Printers - London

Hi Ben

Just looked on the British Book Trade Index

http://www.bbti.bham.ac.uk/results.htm

and there are 17 Coombs listed between 1725 & 1851

Another site on British Book Trade is of the Exeter working papers, which use to be on the Devon Local History site but now is here

http://bookhistory.blogspot.com/2005/12/index.html

A few Coombs on there as well.

Good Hunting

David
