Default I am Stummped

Hi all

So been going through my great grandfathers service records for world war 1, which are so full of info and very interesting.

Prior to enlisting his occupation or calling as it says on the form is listed, it looks like it says Hammer Man. Has anyone ever heard of a Hammer Man before?

I have tried searching the web but come up blank, of course it could be that I am reading it wrong. I have attached the two entries in case I am reading it wrong.

Any help would be marvelous, thank you in advance

Hi Erika

Think they also had Hammermen in the Steel & Iron industries

Basically they controlled the " hammer" that was used to do whatever they did to the steel / iron

Thumbs up Re: I am Stummped

Yes Erica it is Hammerman, they were employed by Thames ironworks which started a football team in the east end called Thames ironworks in 1895 later in 1900,the name was changed to West Ham united known as the Hammers or as the Irons as you can see in the Hammers Crest.

Ken

that is so very interesting I am off to find out more info about it all now. Thanks for letting me know that. I just rang my dad to tell him, although it is my mums Grandfather my dad is a life long West Ham Fan, we used to live opposite Upton Park many years ago. So this info is so interesting in relation to family my history.

Thanks again

Thanks Starlight. Can't believe how helpful everyone is...just wish I could help others in return with info!

Ken just wondering do you know if any of the employment records for the company still exist? I have been looking for info on the company and of course all I can find is West Ham United stuff, lol which not a problem since I grew up blowing bubbles so to speak. I am off now to have another look see what I can find.

Thanks again all
