Message for Ecclescake re N. Ireland Drugan

I am a Drugan from N. Ireland but cannot say if these people are related to me without some further information. There is just one thing which I can add though. Whilst researching in Enniskillen library some years ago I found two people who were sentenced to transportation as a punishment for stealing a blanket. I cannot recall the male name (perhaps James or John) but the female was definately a Catherine Drugan. I remember this as it was my name before marriage. The time was around 1840's I think and they were both young, a married couple I presume or they could possibly have been brother and sister. I felt sadness for them as we have very cold winters here and that was also during the period of the Irish famine. Do you know of any other name connected to these people as in Ireland some names are found to occur more frequently in certain locations. We have Catherine and Bridget in our Drugan family tree but I expect many families did at that time.

Do you know from which port they left or any other details? I look forward to hearing from you

    Cathy

I believe they came to England during the troubled times in Ireland the famine etc.

Most of my Drugans were in Lancashire. or settled there.

I cant find anything before 1851 on English Census. for the DRUGANS. or when they arrived in ENGLAND I dont know.

Message for Ecclescake re Drugan Northern Ireland

I do not have any evidence of a connection with Lancashire but that does not mean that it is not possible. The records in Ireland pre 1864 are very few but I do know that my great great grandparents were living in the Cavan and Fermanagh areas before the famine.. The main town in that area is Enniskillen. The name Drugan is quite rare in Ireland and I know of only around 5 families who were probably all related although I have no proof. Some of the northern Irish Drugan's settled in Glasgow Scotland, and others in the USA Pennsylvania and Ohio areas. Do you know if there was an Owen in the family. I found the name to have been used a lot in the 19th Century Drugan's. Also we have had twins in the family in past generations but not today, also some red hair but not a lot mainly dark hair. My late aunt studied nursing in Maccelsfield Cheshire England in 1930's but I do not think that she had relatives there. Keep in touch

    Hi Cathy,

I am not sure about an OWEN as yet.

I am having to work backwards from Bridget Drugan who married Henry Lowe.

The others on the census for Lancashire is all I have at the moment. Some DRUGANS

settled in other parts ie Bolton Farnworth but not checked that lot out for sure on the census yet, May be there is a connection there somewhere.

Not many of them about LOL. Will let you know as soon as I can find out anyhtign else about them.

    Hi Ecclescake

I have just come across your thread about the DRUGAN family who were in Eccles, near Manchester in the 1850s.

My wife is a g-g-granddaughter of John Dean and Mary Drugan who married on 27 Sep 1852 at All Saints Catholic Chapel, Barton Upon Irwell.

They migrated to Australia, arriving in Brisbane on 18 Apr 1863 on ship 'Everton'. They had 5 children born in Eccles. However, 3 died in Eccles before they came to Australia. So only 2 children came with them on the ship. Another child was born on the ship, and he died on the ship or very soon after they arrived in Brisbane. They then had another 2 children born in Brisbane.

Mary Drugan was the daughter of Dennis & Mary Drugan. According to her Australian death certificate she was born about 1832 in Enniskillen, Ireland.

I have found a number of England census entries and some baptism and marriage entries in the parish registers for All Saints Catholic Chapel, Barton Upon Irwell, for the Drugan and Dean families. Exactly how the members of the Drugan family fit together is a bit fuzzy from the limited information, but I have made a best guess of it.

From the information you have provided in this thread, I believe the Drugan family you are researching is definitely the same one that I have been researching. Cathy Rowan's reference to the Drugans coming from Enniskillen also ties in with what I have, so she is probably also linked.

The biggest difficulty that I have found in my past research on the Drugan family is that the name is frequently misspelt. I have seen the family's name spelt in various records in about 8 different ways, including Duggan, Drogan, Doogan, Dugan, Druggan, Dougal, Dougan.

I'd be very interested in exchanging information on the Drugan family with you to see if we can piece full family details together back into Ireland. You can e-mail me directly if you like or respond through this forum.

    Regards

    David

    Hi Murphy1990

It sounds like a good chance that there is a link between our Drugans. Can you go back any further than your g-grandfather, John Drugan, or be more specific about where in Northern Ireland your Drugans came from? If you don't know, can your grandfather Drugan provide any help?

    Regards
