Default William George Tweedie/Tweedy from Belfast, Ireland - where do I look for his parents

I have been searching and all I can find is William George Tweedy b 20 Jul 1865 in co cavan. He married Margaret Mcdowell b 1868 in Belfast. They had 4 children, William George, Mary Ethel, Ernest and John Frederick.
Any help would be greatly appreciated with marriage/death certificates or their parents. Can't seem to find anything concerning Northern Ireland.

    Many thanks,
    Linda

I’d suggest you order a copy of William George Tweedy’s birth certificate. It was registered in Cavan 1865, Volume 13, page 109. That should give you his parents names and their address at the time. You can order a photocopy of this certificate from GRO Roscommon. Provided you quote the full information above on the application and GRO don’t have to do any searching, they only charge €4. The General Register Office Ireland :: An tSeirbhs um Chlr Sibhialta

This looks like your family in the 1901 & 1911 censuses:

    www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Pottinger__part_of_/King_s_Road/228626/

The couple had 6 children, 4 of whom were still alive in 1911. Their marriage was registered in Lurgan July – Sept 1889, Volume 1, page 873. William George Tweedie & Margaret M’Dowell. (You can get a photocopy from GRO Roscommon – see above). George's occupation has been mistranscribed on the computerised version of the 1911 census. His real occupation is a fancy box maker, and is not as shown.

Thank you so much for your reply. I been away, hence the delay in answering. While away, I found a William Tweedie and Maria McMullen born abt 1841 in Cavan who might be the parents but find seaching for Irish records more difficult than English. Apparently I have been told that my Tweedie's came from Scotland but don't have a clue how to link them to Ireland.

I appreciate any help and most grateful for any tips or clues.

Tweedie does seem a Scottish surname, though your family were Church of Ireland, which suggests more of an English background. If they were Scottish they’d be more likely to be Presbyterian. However people did switch religions, especially following mixed marriages, so yours could be of Scottish origin. If so, they may well have come as result of the Plantation of Ulster, which started in 1610. However there are very few records of the individuals who came then and so you’ll be lucky to trace back to that era. Most Irish research fizzles out around 1800 unless you were a big landowner or famous.

Oh my, doesn't sound good for being able to track these Irish people back to Scotland I guess. Are there any records of people travelling from Scotland to Ireland?? It's so different than tracing back in England. Thanks so much for your help, anything is much appreciated.

No there are no records of people travelling from Scotland to Ireland. It was just a domestic journey within the same country. No different to crossing a state line today.
