Thread: Ongs in Norwich

Hi there good people.

I've heard that the Ongs who have lived in Norfolk for the best part of 300 years originated in Belgium.

I'd be obliged if anybody is able to confirm this and fill me in on the details.

I have a 1783 marriage of Humphrey to Susannah Ratcliff in Norwich St Stephens. Humphrey sounds a very English name to me, so assume at least one generation prior to that date.

Don't know if it will be of any help, but IGI has a baptism for an Anne Ong, parents Robert and Mary. St Stephen's, Norwich, 20th July 1698.

I saw that, which again points to very early settling if they are of Belgian extraction, which the family insist, without any evidence.
