Default Edward Connell

I've only been researching for a couple of weeks, so a bit unsure how to proceed with my line of research. I know that Edward Connell was born in Tipperary in 1821, and then at some point moved to England and married Mary Ann, who was born in Kidderminster. I'm looking to find out how and when Edward came to England, and also to move further back on that side.

Hi BB87,

Tracing Irish ancestors can be a challenge at the best of times, and in many cases getting to a birth circa 1821 is quite an accomplishment.

That being said, you might or might not get lucky. What do you already know about Edward? What sources have you found (e.g., English census returns, children's birth/bastism records, death certificate)?

Chances are, you won't find a record of him coming to England, as travel between Ireland and England was considered domestic, and no passenger lists were kept.

If he was ever in the army, or sought parish poor relief, you might have a chance of learning more. If he left a will, there may be mention of relatives back in Ireland, possibly including a location.

Do you know if he was a Catholic or a Protestant? Protestants were often wealthier, and more likely to leave legal or other records.

What about Edward's occupation? Could he be listed in a Trades Directory? If he was well off, you might be able to find an obituary, if you know where and when he died.

Do you know if his parents or any of his siblings also came to England? Perhaps you could find something for one of them.

Keep in mind, as well, that the family name could also be written (or transcribed) as Cannell, Connelly, O'Connell, etc... and not necessarily consistently.

If you want to work backwards, I strongly recommend "Tracing Your Irish Ancestors", by John Grenham - try to get the latest edition (3rd?) which came out in 2005 or 2006. He is very good about explaining what types of data are available for each county and where to find them. Perhaps you can borrow a copy from your local library.

I don't mean to sound discouraging, but be prepared that you might be in for a long search, with no guarantee of success.

Good luck -

Tim

Thanks Tim - I can tell I'll be in for a long hard search but hopefully something will come up!

At the moment all of my information about Edward comes from census returns after he married Mary Ann - he was a greengrocer at some point, so I doubt he was very wealthy lol.

I'll have a hunt for the book you recommend in the local library, hopefully it'll help me on my search.

Thanks again.

Katherine

Tipperary is probably one of the most difficult County in Ireland to research. The Bishop of Cashel and Emly has the copywrite on all the church records. Only one society in Tipperary can do the research and that is actually owned by the church. This is the Tipperary Family History Research Centre. Here is the link.

None of the information is free. I think a search now cost around 10 euros. And if the name is a common one getting the right person is extremely difficult. And I believe there is no guarantee of getting the right person. If you get the right person there you may be lucky and they can be very helpful, but not all of them are apparently.

I was lucky with my main Tipperary rellies that family members did the searches and paid for them and have passed them on to other rellies starting their research. I would dearly love to find out if my gg grandfather and his brothers had any sisters. I am also trying to find a family link to Archbishop Daniel Mannix (Archbishop of Melbourne Australia) who family history has was related to my family. But so far no luck as I have no money to pay for searches.

I firmly believe that all BDM records should be free for family members to find their relatives.

Good Luck with your search.

Thanks Kate - from what I can tell, Connell (and its variations) was a common name in Tipperary, so if what you say is true I doubt I'd have much luck following that route, although it may end up being my own option..

May have to put research for that side of the family on hold for a while!
