Default 1891 Census Look up - Wright

Hi,
I have been researching my family history on and off for 12 years I have had help from other researchers (paid ones) but still cannot find the daughter of my GtGrandfather from his first marriage! He is called Joseph Wright (there are hundreds of them) he was born in October 1859 in Stanley-cum-Wrenthorpe Yorkshire at a place called Blacker Lodge. Ok so far, I found him on 1881 census as a visitor in his sisters house in Farnworth, Bolton. I found him again after his second marriage on 1901 census again in Farnworth. Cannot find him on 1891 census!! I know he was married as a widower in 1892 to Sarah Fletcher I have the paperwork! The problem is I understand from a family member now no longer with us that he had a daughter but his first wife died giving birth to her. She (the daughter) appears on 1901 census aged 15 born in Farnworth in 1886 but I cannot find her before that date (1901). Living in Sleaford Lincolnshire I have not been able to search other than online and I do not quite know where else to look for the elusive Mary A. Wright! Any help much appreciated.
thanks
Carol

Thanks so much that is her i didn't think to look in Yorkshire as Joseph was in lanacashire in 1881 so thought he would be still there with Mary Alice. Just need to find out who Marys Mother was now. My mum will be pleased that a bit more of the puzzle is in place thanks once again.

Hi Carol,

It's a bit of a longshot, but Mary Alice's mother may have been Rhoda PLATT.

I assumed that your information was correct - i.e., that she really did die in childbirth - and looked for the death of a Female WRIGHT in the same quarter as Mary Ann's birth (I checked the next quarter as well, just in case she lingered for a while). The only candidate I found was Rhoda WRIGHT, aged 33, whose death was registered JFM Qtr. 1886 in Bolton Reg. District (Vol. 8c, Page 198), the same quarter and district as Mary Alice's presumed birth.

I then checked for all marriages between a Joseph WRIGHT and a Rhoda, between 1875 and 1886 in either Lancashire or Yorkshire (West Riding). The only entry that turned up was also registered in Bolton District, in OND 1885 (Vol. 8c, Page 433). There were two grooms' names and two brides' names listed, including Joseph WRIGHT and Rhoda PLATT.

If Rhoda was Mary Alice's mother, then she was pregnant when she got married - no shame in that nowadays (IMO), although perhaps at the time it may have raised a few eyebrows.

Given that Rhoda was 6 or 7 years older than Joseph, she may have been a widow when they married, in which case PLATT would not have been her maiden name. Slizzy is correct, of course, that you will need to order Mary Alice's birth certificate to be sure, but I thought you might be interested in considering this possibility.

Good luck with your research,

Tim

That's great news, Carol - congratulations!

Just out of curiosity, does this mean that Rhoda was Mary Alice's mother? If so, I think I've found her on the 1881 census, living with her mother, stepfather, and siblings in Farnworth, Lancashire. Details as follows:

Name Rel. Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation
Thomas LLOYD Head M Male 54 Llansaintffraid, MGY Joiner
Alice LLOYD Wife M Female 54 Harwood, LAN -
Thomas P. LLOYD Son U Male 17 Liverpool, LAN Plaiter (Ctn)
William PLATT StpSon U Male 18 Pendleton, LAN Clogger
Rhoda PLATT StpDau U Female 27 Harwood, LAN Cotton Wvr
Alice PLATT StpDau U Female 24 Fworth/Swntn LAN Cotton Wvr
William NUTTALL Grdson U Male 3 Swntn/Fworth LAN -

Source Information
Dwelling: 104 Ellesmere St
Census Place: Farnworth, Lancashire, England
Reference: RG11/3815/22/37

This comes from the LDS transcription of the 1881 Census, although I made some of my own abbreviations to make everything fit (and then the formatting still didn't work properly!).

It appears that Rhoda's mother Alice married Thomas LLOYD in Bolton District in the OND Qtr. 1872 (Vol. 8c, Page 438), presumably both were widowed at that time.

Assuming that Rhoda and Joseph did marry, it's sad that they had so little time together as man and wife. I wonder if Mary Alice was just visiting her aunt and uncle in 1891, or if they raised her after her mother's death. Do you know if she went back to live with her father after he married Sarah FLETCHER in 1892?

A fascinating story in any event - thanks for sharing it.

Tim

Smile Re: Help I am really stuck!!

Hi Tim,

Yes Rhoda is Mary Alices Mother
Joseph and Rhoda married November 28th 1885 so she was obviously very pregnant by then as Mary Alice was born 1st January 1886!!
I found her on 1901 census at 106 Starcliffe Street Farnworth living with Father Joseph and wife Sarah aged 15 along with stepbrother William my Grandfather and two of his sisters Gladys and Helena. What I find sad is that my Mum never knew her, she says she heard there was a child from Joseph's first marriage but she didn't know anymore than that so what happened to her after the age of 15 I have no idea. I will keep searching maybe I can find a marriage or maybe she died young?
