Hi,
I'm trying to find out more info on my family name and also to see if i can find anyone who knows the name. My grandfather Jonas Palokas came from Lithuania around 1910 he settled in Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland worked in the coal mines and married a local scottish lass. They had a large family, none of them seem to know anything about there father's Lithuanian roots, I'm hitting brick walls trying to find out where in Lithuania he came from. I have found on the Hamburg lists a Jonas Palokas aged 18 travelling from Hamburg to Grimsby 1910, I'm hoping this is my relation but have no solid evidence. My family name became Polockus due to registrars constantly corrupting the family name and putting down what they heard. My grandfather could not read or write and spoke very broken English so when they wrote his name down on any documents he just signed with an X as his mark. I know he had a brother who lived in the Bellshill/Bothwell area but still cannot locate any BMD certificates showing my grandfathers parents names. The names on my grandfathers marriage cert say his parents were Josas Palokas and Ona Palokas (m.s. Milunas) I now know that his name was probably Juozas and Ona's maiden name probably Miliunas. If this information sheds light to anyone or if anyone recognises the name please do not hesitate to contact me. Best regards, Katie |
