Default john kettle

hello there !!
im really stuck on my gt gt grandad. my gt grandads name was walter alfred kettle. on his birth certificate it states his fathers name as john william kettle. ive researched records and i can find only 2 that may fit. the first is john william kettle born city of london, 1843, and the second is john 'white' kettle born st pancras 1843. ive traced john'white kettle to his father, henry kettle, and have found henrys wife etc, but i dony know if this is the right one! maybe someone could help if i list all the info i have on the kettles!........
my granda alfred walter kettle born south west hackney 1910.
my gt granda walter alfred kettle born islington 1883.
this is as far as i get for definate. on alfreds marriage certificate father is walter alfred kettle, walter married a lillian bradley this i know for definate. then im stuck as i said before, i dont know which john kettle to trace! walters marriage to lillian in 1909 states walters dad as john william kettle deceased. does anyone know anything? i would be so grateful if they do!
thanks

Hi Bev,

Does the birth certificate give John William's occupation?

yes. on walters marriage certificate, john is a deceased cabman. i also have a death certificate for a john william kettle who died in holloway and is down as a cab driver. on the 1881 census john was a unemployed warhouse man, well walter was born in 1883 and he could have become a cab driver. sorry, probably too much info!!
thats me, getting carried away! on walters birth certificate john is a cab driver.!!

That's a pity, as I found what I thought was a very promising lead, but the John I've been looking at was a bus conductor, that was in 1871.

the trouble i have is that john and walter dont appear on a census together. walter was born in 1883, this is definate, and i think john died in 1890. ive ordered a copy of johns marriage certificate, so im hoping that gives me some clues. the only definate lead i have is that john is the father on walters wedding cert. there is a john william kettle in wandsworth prison in 1890 too!! i really dont know where to go from here now!!

that is a possible as the john ive traced married an eliza elizabeth graham in 1864. in my tree i have a son george for him, and as i said he could have become a cab driver by the time walter was born in 1883. the thing is, how do i tell if he's the right one?

So Bev, my train of thought is...............maybe Alfred W (1901 above) who is brother to George - could be your Walter Alfred. What do you think? Also John on the 1871 census was born in the City of London.

What's Walter Alfred's occupation on his marriage cert?

walter alfred kettle married lillian kate bradley on dec 25 1909. walters occupation is stated as warhousing, they lived at 24 nichols square, shoreditch, father of walter; john william kettle (deceased)-cabman.
walter was 26 when he married making him born in 1883.

The Alfred W Kettle above (on 1901 census) was born in 1883. I can't read what his occupation is, but I'll take another look and see if I can work it out.
