Hi Tanja,

The Adopted Children Register is a record of all adoptions granted by courts in England and Wales since 1927 and is maintained by the General Register Office. This register is not open to the public. This means that it is no help to genealogists. Indexes which give the name of the child and date of adoption may be viewed at a Family Records center but the names of the natural parents are not given as these are kept in a separate register. The word adopted will however have been added.

Adoption Certificate

When the courts issue an Order of Adoption a replacement birth certificate can then be issued. This will contain:-
I. The adopted persons new name
II. Date, place and country of birth
III. Gender
IV. Name and address of the adoptive parents
V. The Occupation of the adoptive parents
VI. The date of the adoption order, the date granted and the name of the court.

If the person is no longer living descendants (Direct) may be able to get information if they can prove their relationship. Although things have changed slightly now in the past mothers that gave up their children for adoption were told that the child would never be able to trace his/her original birth parents. During the war years their would have been many like this and the parents and further children may still be living.
