    Default ARNOLD

I am researching my ARNOLD ancestors from Co.Monaghan who emigrated to Canada before 1851.

I have Alexander Arnold born about 1763. Wife is not known.

I know of two children, Sarah and Alexander Jr. who did make it to Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada.

Alexander Arnold Jr. was one of the founders of the community in Canada.

I am descended from Joseph Arnold, born in Ireland circa 1810, immigrated to Essa, Simcoe County, Ontario. Joseph's eldest son by his second marriage was named Alexander. He also had sons named James and John and a daughter Sarah. He came to Essa, Simcoe around the time that your Alexander Arnold and his sons James and John arrived. I feel reasonably certain there is a relationship between my Joseph and your Alexander, but thus far, I have not been able to confirm it. Also, I did not know where in Ireland Joseph might have been born. He was definitely Protestant--probably raised Presbyterian, although that might have been the faith of his second wife--but, in any case, he was undoubtedly from Northern Ireland. He had at least two sons, William and Joseph Jr., from his first marriage, who were living with him and his second wife in 1871. He also had 10 children with his second wife. I was wondering if you have run across a Joseph Arnold in your research into the Arnolds in County Monaghan? I would be happy to share what I have learned about Joseph's family with you also.

Hi, I am sure we are of the same family. All of my mothers paternal ancestors came to Essa, Simcoe Co. and remain there for the most part. My ancestors intermarried with Speers/Spiers/Pearson/Jamison among others. Are you on Ancestry?

Thank you for your very prompt reply; I am encouraged that your family might be the link I've been looking for back to Ireland, since, until today, I had no idea at all where in Ireland Joseph might have come from.

Yes, I am on Ancestry also. I have not posted my tree, though, because it is still very much a work in progress, but I would be happy to share what I have with you.

I think Joseph's first wife may have been named Maria, since I found a Simcoe County marriage record for a Lucinda Arnold, b. 1839, dau of Joseph and Maria. Two older sons, William (b. 1844) and Joseph (b. 1846), appear with Joseph Sr. and his second wife in the census of 1871. I do not know what happened to either of them after that.

Joseph's second wife has been a stumbling block for me. I have never seen her given name spelled the same way twice, which makes searching for her very difficult. I suspect the spelling on her birth or baptism record probably begins with F-Y-D but I have seen all of these spellings on various records: Feddyman, Fydamen, Fidman, Fitmen, Thidman, Tedamen, and Tittiman. One of her children's marriage records gives her maiden name as Frank; another as Donaldson. Her own death record indicates she was born in Quebec. Some of her children said she was Scottish, others Irish. I know nothing concrete of her origins or where or when she married Joseph.

This second wife was probably 20-40 years younger than her husband. Her birth year is shown as being 1833-1839. Joseph's age is given between 1800-1813 with 1810 being most common. They had 10 children together, six boys and four girls. I know something about all of them except one of the middle sons, John, and the youngest daughter, Sarah. In the case of John, there are a number of John Arnolds in Essa at that time, and I can't be certain if he is or isn't one of them. In Sarah's case, I have found no record of her beyond the census of 1881 when she was 8. I do not have a marriage record for Joseph Arnold Sr for his first or second marriages.

If you would like to email me through this site, I would be happy to email a pdf file to you with what information I can about Joseph's descendants. I would also be most grateful for any information you have (or your theories) as to how Joseph ties in with Alexander Arnold Sr and his offspring.

I don't know how to PM here, but if you email

karamia@live.com, I will link you to my personal email address and on to my ancestry pages! I have stories to tell about the family that I don't want to put on a public site.
