Default Prisoner WW2 Poland.

Can anyone help me find out any information about prisoners of war? My father was called up for service in 1939. Went to France in february 1940,was left behind at Dunkirk and captured at St. Valery 3 weeks later. He spent the next 5 years in Poland.

I can't seem to find out any information about the prison, or anything else to do with prisoners sent to Poland. Is there a website out there that could help me?

Thank you
Pam

Hi Pam - I think any records will be at the National Archives. Go to their website and look at their research guide Prisoners of War, British.
Send me a pm if you have any difficulty

Hi Pam
I have just joined Ancestryaid so have just seen your post.
My grandad was also a POW in Poland and was captured in St. Valery.
If you want to find out what camps he was in write to :-
International Committiee of the Red Cross
Central Tracing Acency
19 Avenue de la Paix
CH 1202
Geneva
It doesn't take too long to receive a reply (or it didn't when I did it) it is totally free and it will give the persons name, date and place of birth his rank and unit service number, date and place of capture and places of internment, aslo his POW number and when he was liberated.
I also applied for my grandads service records but of course all it showed was when he went to France and his approx date of caputre then nothing else.
You can also get his POW record from :-
Cathy Pammenter
War Pensions Agency
Room 6129
Norcross
Blackpool
FY5 3WP

I really recomend the Red Cross, they were brilliant.
When you write give as much info as you can, name, regiment, service no, home address, place of capture and date of capture if poss'

What regiment was your Father in? was he by any chance attached to the 51st Highland Division?
If he was captured on 12th June the chances are he was either in camp XXA or XXB. which were at Marienburg and Thorn
Depending on your answers I can give you loads more info.

Regards another Pam

Hi Pam (great name by the way !!)

Thank you for the information you have given me. I hadn't even thought of the Red Cross, so I'll write to them this weekend.
Unfortunately, the only thing I know is that Dad was in the Middlesex Regiment. Hopefully they'll be able to help.
Many thanks once again.
